Old Cape Henry Lighthouse

Hi everyone, Staying in Williamsburg next week and will be coming to Va Beach for a day. Just trying to plan a little. How long is the drive? I know mileage but not traffic in area. Also does anyone know how long does it take usually to get to the lighthouse thru the base security and stuff. Thanks

When I visited the Cape Henry Lighthouse last Memorial Day weekend, there were about 3 cars ahead of us in line, and it took several minutes per car, so it was about 25 minutes before we got to the lighthouse. They need to see ID for everyone in the vehicle, and all passengers must get out so they can search the car thoroughly, from glove compartment to trunk. They even used a mirror to look under the car, but they were very pleasant and efficient the whole time.

Depending on the tunnel traffic it should take you about 45 minutes to an hour. Expect a tunnel delay-so if you are on a time frame factor that in.I would also avoid a day trip on Friday.

As the previous poster mentioned, you may have to wait a few minutes to get on the base-once there it is a few minutes up the road.

Just did that trip yesterday which was a Saturday...never again.....do on a weekday...tunnel wait was one hour which there is no reason for since they told us there was no problem it is just that people slow down and don%26#39;t maintain their speed when it funnels down to two lanes from four and goes into tunnel. But plan accordingly, even on a weekday miss the heavy hours. Then have fun! Raining here today but rest of week looks good!
