May 25th.....should we stock up on food before arriving?

Hi there

We%26#39;re an English couple travelling with our teenage daughters from New York city via Atlantic City.

Should we stop off and stock up on food en route. I get the impression that food is expensive in Chincoteague???

There%26#39;s a big Food Lion as you turn off Route 13 and head towawrd Chincoteague. They should have anything you need. You should have any trouble buying other stuff on the island. I don%26#39;t recall it being so expensive but we have a tendency to buy seafood on the island.

If the little places along the road to the beach are open, you can get crabs and shrimp right there. Some, if no all, will steam them for you too.

The Food Lion is a fully stocked supermarket, and the prices are reasonable. You%26#39;ll be able to find what you need there. In Virginia, you can buy beer and wine in grocery stores. There is an ABC (liquor store) in the same shopping center as the Food Lion, and there is a nice, not too expensive, wine shop in town, as well.

There is absolutely NO reason to ';stock up'; before you get there.

As mentioned previously, there is a nice Food Lion at the intersection of 13 and 175 -- however if you are coming across on the Ferry it is shorter to drive down on Route 12 off of 113.

There is a perfectly acceptble supermarket on Cleveland Street (Fresh Pride) for most staples. It is small and old -- but well stocked. I wouldn%26#39;t say they have the best produce or meats -- but for general groceries they are fine, they are open late, and as a chain they have competitive prices.

There is a fabulous wine, cheese and gourmet food store (Wine Cheese and More) right on Main Street where you can get those ';special'; treats.

The Waterside will certainly not mind you bringing crabs to the picnic tables --that%26#39;s why they are there.

Almost all the restaurants will do takeout also -- the Sea Shell does full dinners and desserts, Woody%26#39;s does bbq, Saigon Village does great Vietamese (great food-- NO dining in atmosphere), Mr. Baldy%26#39;s does sandwhiches, burgers, etc.

Try the Russel Seafood company for crabs -- they also do complete take out meals. Tell them when you want to pick up your crabs and they will be fresh and hot and ready -- cooked to order rather than in coolers like on Maddox Boulevard.

You will find food in general on the island to be cheaper than it will be in Atlantic City or other resorts -- Chincoteague is a family resort and the amenities and prices are geared accordingly.

Sorry -- made a mistake - the seafood company that does the meals and the takeout is the Gary Howard Seafood company -- I think they are the best on the island

You probably don%26#39;t need to stock up before you arrive. We normally bring pop and water and snacks and cereal and basics when we stay for the week. There is a store in Chincoteague, Fresh Pride and it has everything you might need. However, (and I%26#39;m from Ohio so maybe I%26#39;m used to lower prices) it did seem pretty expensive for most items. The restaurants aren%26#39;t anymore pricey than any other vacation destination. As others have mentioned they also have roadside stands and places to buy fresh seafood. I hope you enjoy your trip!

Thank you to everyone who posted a reply for me!!!

They were really helpful and told me everything I needed to know.

Once again TA members come out top for travel advice.

Thank you!

Most of the restaurants do takeout so you can find a great spot to enjoy. There is chinese and veitnamese subs and pizza as well as seafood. Some to try that we especially like...Great Wall on Maddox, J%26amp;B subs on Main has great cheesesteaks, Famous Pizza on Maddox has spinach pie %26amp; greek salads as well as pizza that we love. Capt.Zacks on Deep Hole Rd. has the best in seafood, they will steam, fry, or grill for you %26amp; you can always get it to cook yourself. Siagon Village is a nice change located near stoplight on Main. Hope this helps. Check out the Chincoteague Chambers website.
