Are any parts of CW Free

You can walk the streets, go into the shops and eat in the taverns without having a pass. You will see some interperters in colonial attire and be able to get some great photos.

Are any parts of CW Free

Could you tell us how long you will be there and would you be interested in more then just CW? CW, Jamestown Settlement, Historic Jamestowne Island, Yorktown Victory Center, and Yorktown Battlefield are all part of the Historic Triangle. They are connected by the Colonial Parkway which is about 23 miles long. Lots of things to do in the area.

Will be there 6 days - planning one in Norfolk and one in Virginia Beach. Would be instrested in Civil war and plantation options.......

Regarding your plantation question, there are some really beautiful plantations shortly outside of the immediate Colonial part of Williamsburg, in Charles City. Here is a website that can give you more info %26amp; pictures, to help you choose. That is also where Shirley Plantation is, that you mentioned. http://www.jamesriverplantations.org/

Carter%26#39;s Grove was a very popular plantation for tourists, but unfortunately was purchased %26amp; used for a private residence now %26amp; is no longer open to the public.

Here is also a site to help you with some Civil War sites %26amp; trails in this area, that you mentioned you were interested in- civilwartraveler.com/EAST/…index.html

All of these Civil War sites have fascinating personal stories behind them. I particularly enjoyed Endview Planation, Lee Hall Mansion, The Mariners%26#39; Museum, %26amp; the VA War Museum in neighboring Newport News

Hope that helps. Have a wonderful time.

Thank you -These links have some very good information -

Bruton Parish Church and the Wren Building (c. 1696) at William and Mary are open to the publc and do their own tours at no charge. Shirley Plantation ( a Carter home)is about 30 miles from Williamsburg on Rt.5 toward Richmond, where many Civil War sites and museums are. Berkley Plantation (Harrison family) is also about 25 miles. These plantations date from the early 1600s and are the only two open for tours at this time. Just beyond Shirley is Malvern Hill, the battle site of the last of the Peninsula campaign. Endview and Lee Hall, as mentioned above are in Newport News and each of them ocassionally hosts a Civil War re-enactment. You would have to visit their websites for dates.

thank you for the information will definately look into.

I just spent a wk in CW also on a budget and we stay at a timeshare, Kings Creek Plantation which was just about 3 miles from the CS visitor center which will be very helpful to you and there shuttle service is great, you can walk around the streets of CW, but to get into some of the museums you will need a pass and they have different passes/prices depending on what you really want to see and I went to Shirley Plantation and you can view the outside grounds for free, but to tour the inside of the house you will need to purchase a ticket for $10 and discount $1 off for Seniors, AAA members and the tour is about 1/2 hr, very interesting because it%26#39;s an eleven generation plantation with the 11th generation still living there on the grounds on the 2nd/3rd floor for the house, and just about 5 miles up the road it Berkely Plantation which you also have to pay $10pp for the tour unless your a Virginia resident (get a street address or zip code) and you can get in free to Berkely Plantation for free. We stayed 7 days and loved it alot. Even took the free ferry to Surry County and ate at the Surry House. Enjoy yourself.
