Rainy day activities in wiliiamsburg?

I%26#39;m headed to williamsburg for my first time with my b.f. tomorrow. Actually we%26#39;ll be arriving on Monday, we%26#39;re staying overnight in Cape May to catch the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

I checked the weather and it looks like it will be raining several times. What activities other than enjoying the hotel recommendations can we try? We%26#39;re kind of on a budget.

Thanks!

Rainy day activities in wiliiamsburg?

Rainy weather doesn%26#39;t stop life and activity in Colonial Williamsburg, so if you had planned to visit the historic area, still do so. The trades, homes, Governor%26#39;s Palace and Capitol are all indoor activities, and the afternoon program, Revolutionary City, accomodates the weather by moving inside when necessary. In addition, the Museum at the Public Hospital is worth a morning or afternoon by itself, and it%26#39;s indoors.

Enjoy your visit.

Rainy day activities in wiliiamsburg?

While the indoor activities still take place - you get to them by going outside, so depending on how bad the weather is, many people do not like to tour diring rain, snow, etc.

If it is raining all day you are wet/damp and inside gets wet/damp, especially tracking the ground dirt - so a light sprinkle may not affect your pleasure factor as much as heavy rains.

I love CW, would not visit during rain - just takes away from the overall experience for me. Part of the pleasure is the architecture, gardens, enjoying the ambience, etc.

I would tour the museums for a few hours, have a nice lunch, if the day was a total wash

I drive from williamsburg to NYC often, don%26#39;t usually do the ferry - it takes a little longer, costs more and if it%26#39;s late or having a mechanical can take a lot longer, alternatives not easy. just food for thought. also smaller towns and slower driving. can be a great drive if the ';road trip'; is part of your trip experience. to get from point a to point b not so much.

Hi Daisymay

The suggestions to visit the museums on a rainy day are good ones. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art and the DeWitt Wallace Gallery are both accesible through the Hospital. You could spend hours going from gallery to gallery looking at tapestries, furniture, clothing, silver, china, paintings and more.

It is nice to take a break at the Cafe located there-it serves soups, sandwiches, salads, cold and hot beverages, wine, etc.

The Hennage auditorium offers programs which do require your admission pass and reservations; but, not necessarily an additional charge.

Since this is the time you are going to be in Williamsburg, don%26#39;t let the rain stop you. Plan to tour all the sites you would tour if it were sunny. Don%26#39;t miss the Capitol, the Palace, the Peyton Randolph House (we really like the way this interpretation is done now), the Wythe House, and all the historic trade sites you can fit in. The wig maker is so informative and funny. She will let you know about terms we use today such as off the rack and big wigs. If you walk into the shop without a cap, you may be deemed a ';loose woman.';

Since you will have a car, be sure to include Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne in your visit. You might want to travel a bit further and see one or two of the James River plantations on route 5.

Enjoy no matter what the weather!

Excellent advice guys, thank you all.

My plan is to drive along the Coastal Highway and stop for a few pix at Assateague Island;

arrive Monday eve, do a ghost tour,

Tues. CW,

Wed. Busch Gardens,

Thurs. Yorktown and Jamestown, and

Fri. explore the Greensprings Greenway Interpretive Trail.

Leave Saturday, and maybe take a look at the cherry blossoms in DC on the way home.

Hopefully it will be an action-packed, fun vacation!

I%26#39;ll post my trip experience when I get back in case it%26#39;s useful to others. Have a lovely Easter.

Am looking forward to your trip report. Hope you have a wonderful time, daisymay. Happy Easter to you and to all! May we all enjoy our ';peeps'; today. from Mary
