I have many questions....still! Please answer whichever ones you can! =)
1) I have an extremely picky eater. Think hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza. We wanted to eat at the taverns but nothing appealed to us. She%26#39;s probably too old for the kids menu. Any suggestions for restraunts? I love the Cheese Shop, but thats definitely not her cup of tea.
2) Carriage rides! How early should I be there? How much does it cost? I am staying at the Williamsburg Lodge and I heard you get preferred reservation.
3) We have a few evening programs to choose from: In Defense of Our Liberty, Polly Honeycombe, The Great Theatrical Disaster of 1790, An Evening of Dance at the Palace, Revolutionary Points of View and the Gunpowder Incident. Which of THOSE do you recommend. Sorry, we%26#39;re just not ghost tour people.
4) Is the Lathorn Tour a ghost tour? It didn%26#39;t sound like it but I%26#39;m not sure.
5) Is there a Kmart WalMart or Target anywhere close? We%26#39;ll need groceries and stuff. Even a smaller store will do. Something with lots of choices.
6) Any great souvineers that you would recommend? We have lots of people to shop for.
7) What do you think of the Willaimsburg Antique Shop? I%26#39;m very curious.
8) Has anyone been to Presidents Park? It looks interesting and we were thinking that we would really like it.
9) Anything at all that you would say we have to see would greatly help! We%26#39;re not going to BG(we know the guy who is in charge so we got free tickets last time but we didn%26#39;t even go on one ride). Somehow we completely missed the Revolutionary City last time!! Is this worth it?
THANKS SO MUCH!
Questions, Questions, Questions
1. Gold Course Grill for hot dogs. Also Retro%26#39;s (Merchants Square on Prince George Street) - hot dogs, hamburgers, freshly cut french fries, frozen custard shakes, homemade limeades, etc. Pizza on the Square in the Kimball Theatre. Stephano%26#39;s Pizza, also in Merchants Square is pretty good, too. Huzzahs! near the Visitors Center has pizza and lots of other choices, too.
2. Ask at your hotel; they can give you good advice.
3. Any of them; from the descriptions, which ones interest you the most?
4. Lanthorn tour is not a ghost tour.
5. We have all three, including 2 Targets. The newer, bigger one is near Water Country and Presidents Park.
6. For reasonably priced souvenirs with lots of choice - something for everyone - try King%26#39;s Treasure in Merchants Square. The discount stores listed in #5 also have some souvenirs.
7. Williamsburg Antique Shop? There%26#39;s an Antique Mall in Lightfoot that has lots of dealers and displays - you could spend hours!
8. Haven%26#39;t yet been, but most people I%26#39;ve heard from say it%26#39;s better than they expected, very interesting, lots of info.
9. Yes! Do Revolutionary City. Some of the evening programs mentioned above will be more meaningful after you%26#39;ve experienced Rev City.

^Thanks so much! You are always so helpful!
Have you tried the Lanthorn Tour? I%26#39;m glad to hear its not a ghost tour. Would you say its a nice family type program?
And yes, I meant the antique mall! Thanks! I%26#39;ll be trying that then. Well thanks for all the help! Its so nice to have this forum!
Oops, forgot to add...all of those evening programs interest us. I love to learn fun facts, but I also really enjoy a good play. One thats not scary and is entertaining is what we%26#39;re looking for! =)
The Lanthorn Tour is not a ghost tour but a lantern lit tour of several trade shops. You do not observe the tradesman plying his trade as during the daytime visits to the shops but learn about how tradespeople fit into 18th century society, how he and his family lived and the training necessary to reach his level of expertise.
The only play being performed at this time is Polly Honeycomb. It is typical of 18th century British farce and was a play presented by the Virginia Company of traveling performers.
Your daughter may enjoy Dance, Our Dearest Diversion. It is not ballet but a demonstration of 18th century dances, such as the minuet and the VA reel. Those who want can learn the steps and dance along. An Evening of Dance at the Palace is not on the schedule this summer.
Carriage rides can be booked whenever hotel reservations are made - the only way to reserve in advance. Otherwise, rides can be booked early(weather permitting) on the day of the ride at any ticket office and even at the Lodge, if and when it is decided if there is to be a ticket seller there this year. The cost is $12.50 per person for a 15 minute pleasure ride on a carriage or a 30 minute ride on the stagewagon.
^Thanks! =)
Maybe when we%26#39;re going isn%26#39;t considered summer still but i know its on the calendar of events for the week we%26#39;re going. All the ones I mentioned are going on the week were going(in august).
The Lanthorn Tour sounds good then! I might try that.
The reason we decided not to do Dance Our Dearest Diversion is because we don%26#39;t want to participate in the dancing. My daughter is too embarrassed and says she doesn%26#39;t like partner dancing. I suppose thats why she hasn%26#39;t tried ballroom yet.
I think we%26#39;ll try the carriage ride. It sounds like fun even if $25 for 15 minutes is pricey.
This forum is great! Thanks again!
For Dance, Our Dearest Diversion, audience members are given the opportunity to participate, but participation is not required. Definitely do one of the dance programs, though.
^ Alright, it sounds like we%26#39;ll definitely fit in a dance program! =) I think its really cool to be able to go in the Palace at night. The tour there was just OK, at least thats what we thought.
I am especially hoping for peoples opinion on the Lanthorn Tour, Revolutionary Points of View, the Gunpowder Incident, and In Defense of Our Liberty. Those seem to be the ones that we%26#39;re not sure if we will enjoy.
#6 question: I second the motion on King%26#39;s Treasure. Really nice things, at reasonable prices. All your typical stuff, keychains, magnets, pens, pencils, etc, etc. Plus nice quality t-shirts and hats. Plus lots of odds and ends, too numerous to mention here. It is a fun store. I%26#39;ve learned to buy one better quality t-shirt then a lot of cheapo ones. They last longer and fit better.
I%26#39;ve gone to The Pottery Factory for Williamsburg Pottery. I get the ';seconds'; which are like half price of what you would pay in the shoppes, maybe more. No matter to me, they just sit on my shelf anyway, and nobody knows or cares. I don%26#39;t know if I would make a trip to the Pottery any more tho. What do you all think? It%26#39;s ';cheese factor'; has really gone up thru the years, in my opinion. It is sort of fun for a first timer, tho. I mean, I%26#39;m not sorry I went, EACH and EVERY time I%26#39;ve visited CW.
Might as well promote the Candy Factory Warehouse while I%26#39;m at it. It, too, is a fun store. Lot%26#39;s of retro candy, penny candy, CHOCOLATES!!! and a vast amount of silly wrapped candy that the kids would have fun with.
catneal,
Thank you for informing that the Lanthorn Tour is NOT observing craftsmen doing their trades. I really, really thought it was just that and now am reconsidering whether I want to switch my tickets to something else. Do you have an opinion as to the quality of the tour? (catneal doesn%26#39;t have to answer--I would be happy to hear from anyone who has been!)
I don%26#39;t know if anyone has yet answered about Presidents Park, but I just ran across the reviews in the ';Things to Do'; section of Tripadvisor, and they are terrible. I would scratch that one off your list.
