Opinions on Washington DC from Fredericksburg

I am going to be travelling round virginia for 9 days in June. I will be basing myself in Danville got family there, planned on travelling up the skyline drive then accross and stay a night in Washington then down to Fredericksburg for a day.

Problem is parking in washington, would you suggest going straight to Fredericksburg and staying there for two nights and travel into Washington on the train then back at night.

Also any recommendations on things to see and do would be great.

Thanks

James

Why don%26#39;t you stay somewhere like Arlington, where parking is available, the Metro into DC takes about 10 minutes, and there%26#39;s plenty to do and places to eat in the evening. If you stay in Fredericksburg, 3 hours of each day that you could be sightseeing you%26#39;ll spend on the train with all the other commuters. If you want to go back to your room before you go out to eat, you can do that if you stay in Arlington.

There are a number of hotels in the Springfield area (Courtyard by Marriott, Days Inn, Hilton, etc.), and many of them probably offer free shuttles to the Springfield metro stop.
