Where to stay?

I would like to take my husband to Colonial Williamsburg for our anniversary in June. I would like to stay somewhere in the center of everything so we be within walking distance of things. Any suggestions preferably under $100/per night? TIA!

Where to stay?

foodie 678,

I just came back from a wks vacation in Va. I have a map and looking in the Colonial area there is Williamsburg Lodge, Williamsburg Inn and also near the Visitor Center there is Woodlands Inn (I think that is the name of the hotel). Getting around CW you have shuttles from the visitor center and be prepared to walk the colonial area at least plan 2 days for all the little shops because most of them have a tour which take about 10-15mins about the bldg (museum) you seeing. If you send me your address I can send you my old map that I received at the visitor center for you to have. If you go to the visitor center they are very informative and you can buy your tickets there for everything in the CW area, find out about the shuttle service and also on the website. Try www.visitwilliamsburg.com for some info. We stayed at Kings Creek Plantation very nice, had a rental car and mostly parked at visitor center and took the shuttle to all CW, Jamestown, Yorktown. If you like seafood try the Kings Mill Plantation, Bay Bistro (make reservations) and go early by5pm on Fridays only for all the seafood you can eat. Hope you have a good time, we did.

Where to stay?

We will be staying at the Williamsburg Lodge. Previously, we stayed at the Governors Inn which was soooo worth the money. It is a CW owned hotel. We got it for $39 or $49 last year, which included passes to CW(saves A LOT of money), Continental Breakfast, 50% evening programs(changed to 25% now), and free drinks all day. It was awesome with our tight budget. The rooms were clean, which is what we cared about. Unfortunately the Governors Inn will be closed for renovation when we%26#39;re going back to CW.

So anyways, we decided we definitely wanted to stick with a CW owned hotel. The free passes and amazing location just seemed worth it. We received the Williamsburg Lodge for $109 a night. If you pay $35 to become a CW supporter, you%26#39;ll get $20 off A NIGHT. So our entire stay for 5 nights was $609. The location is pretty much in the middle of CW, perfect!!!

Also, there is the Woodlands for a bit cheaper than the Williamsburg Lodge. Check all their hotels out. I%26#39;m impressed by them!

Hi, Foodie -- to stay ';in the center of things'; pretty much would mean 3 out of the 5 official hotels of Colonial Williamsburg. The Williamsburg Inn is a 5-star resort, the Williamsburg Lodge is a 4-star hotel and the Colonial Houses are real 18th-century buildings evocatively adapted for guest stays. I would have said that none of those offer anything under $100/night, except that Tutus seems to have found a great rate at the Lodge.

There are 5 other walking distance options, including the other 2 official hotels (Woodlands and Governors Inn)and a few chain hotels. Just note that with the exception of The Woodlands that doesn%26#39;t mean that you stroll out the front door and through fragrant gardens to the restored area. Not that the scenery is gritty -- just mundane.

Here are some websites to peruse:

Williamsburg Hotel and Motel Association: http://www.gowilliamsburg.com/

Williamsburg Bed and Breakfast Network -- http://www.bandbwilliamsburg.com/

Williamsburg guest houses -- visitwilliamsburg.com/book-lodging/guest-hom鈥?/a>

Williamsburg vacation rentals -- visitwilliamsburg.com/book-lodging/vacation-鈥?/a>

Williamsburg timeshares: vacationtimesharerentals.com/United-States/鈥?/a>

Colonial Williamsburg official hotels: http://www.colonialwilliamsburgresort.com/

Hotels within walking distance (1/2 mile) of the restored area: Governor鈥檚 Inn, (a CW property), Patrick Henry Inn, Clarion Historic District and Hospitality House.

Personally, I%26#39;d splurge to stay ';in the center'; because to me nothing beats wandering around with my first cup of coffee as dawn quietly washes over this most beautiful town. But if you must choose a hotel a few minues away, fear not. Parking at the Visitors Center couldn%26#39;t be easier (or free-er) and the footpath or shuttle busses work just great.

Happy anniversary to you both!

It%26#39;s not under a $100 a night, but give some thought to staying at the Lightfoot Tenement, a colonial rental home. We spent our 45th anniversary there in March. You can view it online at the CW website under colonial homes. It is a perfect spot for a couple. It has a living room with a fireplace, a bedroom with canopy bed, kitchenette, bath and dressing area. It is behind the Magazine, just steps away from a shuttle bus stop. In addition to the Magazine, you are just a short walk away from several other historical sites such as the Peyton Randolph House. You will definitely be in the center of everything. Happy anniversary.

Good suggestion, RQT.

To clarify, the Lightfoot Tenement is one of the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Homes Collection; reservations can be made at the main reservations line, 1-800-HISTORY.

I decided to do some more research regarding CW hotels for you. Here%26#39;s what I%26#39;ve come up with.

First off, sign up to support CW. You can call them about that if you like. Not only are you helping CW, you%26#39;ll be getting some freebies throughout the year and also getting between $10-$20 off per night at one of their hotels. This card is a minimum of $35. I got a cool CW blanket with it! =)

Your options are:

The Governors Inn: in June the price per night is anywhere from $69-$89. No way would I fork over the $89, when there%26#39;s more options that are much nicer. $69 seems like a good price to me though. Remember, if you buy that card you will receive $10 off a night. This hotel has continental breakfast, the CW passes, and free drinks all day.

The Woodlands: $99-$139 throughout June. Plus $10 off your stay. It again includes Continental Breakfast and passes.

It looks as if the Colonial Houses will not be an option for you in June. Very few days are available and only the nicest rooms are.

The providence hall guest houses are very expensive compared to what you%26#39;re trying to work with. About $229 a night. I don%26#39;t have much knowledge at all about these rooms.

My personal choice, the Williamsburg Lodge, looks as if theres not many dates available once again. Bummer! :( Some hotels fill up faster than others.

And lastly the FIVE STAR Williamsburg Inn, doesn%26#39;t look as if it is available hardly at all either. I%26#39;m sure you wouldn%26#39;t be willing to spend $400 a night anyways. Too expensive for my taste...and budget! ;)

So theres some research for you! Sometimes its hard to book a hotel for summer. They seem to fill up fast!

If the information about CW lodging in the aforementioned post is from the foundation%26#39;s lodging web site, be sure and call the reservations center (1-800-HISTORY) to inquire about your specific dates of travel. The web site can sometimes be unreliable when it comes to actual hotel availability and booking, just as the programming dates and times can be.

I can offer some insight into Providence Hall Wing of the Williamsburg Inn. It is considered part of the Inn, although it is not under the same roof, but rather a few steps to the east. It was built in the 1970s, in a classic modernist style, and outfitted luxuriously, with Asian accents. The rooms are unusually large and the ones on the south side have patios/balconies with views over a pond and waterfall to a beautiful little 18th century house -- Providence Hall, now used by CW for VIP meetings. (The house is not open to the public.) The other side overlooks the seldom-used tennis courts. It is extremely quiet and private. Comfortable, too, although I have to say that my experience there dates back several decades! It is completely unlike the Inn because of it%26#39;s modernism, and quite the opposite of the cheerfully bustling Lodge. No lobby, no restaurant, no morning coffee cart ... you use the Inn.

Providence Hall bears a higher pricetag -- but it does indeed put you in the center of things for half of what you%26#39;d be paying at the Inn. Availability could be a problem at this juncture, of course.

Good luck in your search.
