Mixing Bowl

What%26#39;s the construction situation at the ';mixing bowl';? I have been avoiding that for years, but some are now telling me it is complete? I will be southbound in late December, and will take the western loop of the I495 Beltway around DC.

Mixing Bowl

Basically done, and I think by late December will be completely done, with the exception of work they will do at some point in connection with expansion of the Beltway. There are still lane closures from time to time as they fix things, but I don%26#39;t think it is something you%26#39;d need to avoid as a general matter anymore. It is a really amazing feat of engineering to behold.

For updates on lane closures and project status, they%26#39;ve got a website; it looks like they haven%26#39;t had any lane closures since last month at this point:

Mixing Bowl

As a long time Va. resident the mixing bowl is 80% complete in my opinion except for the piles of dirt and construction machinery. Most of us can travel the sky high loops and roundabout curves at 70 mph :} ; but you must be good at reading the signs and merging! Even I can become distracted and end up on my way to Baltimore, or to Tyson%26#39;s corner on my way to Arlington.

They have really done a good job though. I thought it was a mistake at first . Some exits go in the opposite direction of where you think you should be going, and wrap back around; so the first time is unnerving. But the HIGH HUGE overpasses flow like water except for traffic times AM %26amp; PM. Just keep your eyes on the massive signs, watch out for the idiots who merge at the last second across 4 lanes; and you will LOVE it.
