Christmas in Williamsburg

We are thinking of planning a trip to Williamsburg sometime in the month of December, and would like to know what to expect. In particular, we are looking for something along the line of house tours, lighting tours, etc. Last year we spent a weekend in Cape May, NJ, and are looking for something similar to what they offer around the holidays.

Christmas in Williamsburg

We went the week before Christmas 2006 and had a great time. While a colonial Christmas is not the kind of Christmas we celebrate to day, it was wonderful to experience it as they would have in the 18th century. I really enjoyed the natural decorations on all the doors. I believe they did a Christmas decorations tour while we were there. We got to see the Fife and Drum Corps march through town and the cressents being lit along the streets. There were special evening programs too.

Basset Hall was decorated for Christmas as it might have been when the Rockafellers were living there.

I wrote a review with pics that you can read by clicking on my photo and going to my profile.

Christmas in Williamsburg

Hi, treadway -- Could you clarify what you mean by ';house tours'; and ';lighting tours';? If you mean privately-occupied or modern homes and electric Christmas decorations ... not really.

Within the bounds of the 18th century restoration: the historic area is evocatively - but very, very simply! - decorated in natural materials with candles for lighting. There is a huge calendar of special programs and dining events for the entire period from Thanksgiving to Christmas. (Some tapering off, however, in the 2 weeks immediately preceding the holiday.)

Let us know what you are aiming at and perhaps we can offer more details.
