Driving??

We will be starting out the morning from Louisville Ky and will be stopping in Lewisburg WV the first night then driving onto VB. From the looks of it that is around 5.5 hours a day of driving so lots of time to see things. We like to travel the off roads as long as they are scenic. Maybe get in a hike on one of the days. I thought I read somewhere (but cant find it in my notes) that there is a hike that ends at a waterfall. We are also interested in the history around those areas.

After we leave Louisville,we are thinking of taking hwy 64 to Charleston then take Hwy 60 to toward Lewisburg. What is along that route??

As of now we are thinking of taking Hwy 64 from Lewisburg to Buena Vista. From there take Hwy 60 but after looking at the map, I cant find a whole lot to do on that part of Hwy 60.

Thanks for your help!!

The most direct route, as you mentioned, from Lewisburg WV to Va Beach is I64...not a bad road but not especially scenic %26amp; peaceful. You could consider driving part of the Blue Ridge Parkway (south) to milepost 86, Peaks of Otter, fairly close to Buena Vista. Three beautiful mountains, great hiking trails, I wrote a review of hiking in the area if you are interested. Then you could take Route 460 to Va Beach (joins I64 in Suffolk). 460 is a limited access divided highway for much of the way but then becomes 2 lane undivided. It will take more time but offers you different scenery, and a big plus for me is the Dairy Queen in Windsor Va...nice break. For the Ky to WV portion of your trip, you may want to post in those forums for ideas. Hope this helps.

Driving??

Thanks. I would be intersted in where you hiked at. We really enjoy seeinf different parts of the country and feel liek we dont get that by staying on the main interstate the whole trip.

I hiked two of the peaks at the Peaks of Otter, Harkening Hill and Sharp Top...click on ';more about goneagain2'; then click ';reviews'; and check out the review for the Peaks in January %26#39;09. If you get the chance to drive a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are many short hikes along the road. Go to www.nps.gov/archive/blri/hikeva.htm for a list and description of hikes along the Parkway in Va. The list is shown by milepost, the Parkway begins at mp0 in Waynesboro Va and ends at mp469 in Cherokee NC at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

thanks for the info on hiking. What are some things not to miss while driving thru that area?

The route you take, I64 or Route 460 or other, will dictate things to see and do along the way. It sounds like you like outdoor activities and we have some really nice state parks, you can see the parks on a map at www.dcr.virginia.gov, click state parks. Va is full of great small towns, loads of history, cool museums, fun and interesting places. Go to www.virginia.org, click on trip planner and you can see the places along a general route with some details provided.

If you decide to take Route 460, after you pass Petersburg and Waverly, you can take a slight detour to Chippoaks State Park. It has a nice beach on the James River, trails, and plantation buildings. In the summer it can be a bit buggy so bring repellent.

Post again if you have more questions.
