Where to stay for confederate stuff?

We are going to Washington DC for a week, then will stay two nights in Richmond for confederate stuff. Where is the best location to stay? Is okay to drive around town? or we should take buses?

I read a post back to 2007 about the unsafety of the downtown area, is it still the case today?

This will be our first trip to Washington DC and Virginia, so we are very looking forward to it.

Thanks!

Hmm, Confederate stuff.... Richmond is swimming in it, and you will certainly have fun exploring our heritage.

No. 1, don%26#39;t count on the buses for convenient transportation. You%26#39;ll be glad you have a car of your own. For example, the sites of the Seven Days Battles are in the suburbs and outskirts, and you can%26#39;t get to them by bus.

There are some other posts mentioning bed and breakfasts around town; I think there is at least one on or near Monument Avenue. Monument Avenue is well worth a drive down and back, lots of monuments to Confederate leaders.

Downtown is probably OK, you may want to look into the Jefferson Hotel, or the new Mariott, or places in the Shockoe Slip area.

But there are lots of chain hotels to choose from that are further out from downtown, and there will be more dining and shopping options near them.

Have fun.

There%26#39;s a brand new Hilton Garden hotel on Broad St that you may want to take a look at.

There are a number of nice places to eat on Broad St just west of this hotel; my current favorite is Bistro 27:

From the hote, you should be able to walk to both the Museum of the Confederacy and the Confederate White House:

The National Park Service offers guides to a driving tour of the Seven Days Battle, which occurred north and east of Richmond, at their downtown location, the Civil War Visitor%26#39;s Center at Tredegar Iron Works, (which you can also walk to from your hotel). There are some interesting exhibits there as well. In Richmond itself, but a very long uphill walk from your hotel, is another NPS Visitor%26#39;s Center at Chimbarazo, which was a Civil War hospital. There is also a Visitor%26#39;s Center at Cold Harbor, which is about 10 miles outside town.

If you%26#39;ve got a little more time, Petersburg, about 25 miles to the south, has much to offer in the way of Civil War history. There%26#39;s the battlefield to visit, and a siege museum in town. http://www.nps.gov/pete/

You should not worry about walking or driving around downtown Richmond.

Enjoy your visit!

Definately visit Petersburg - we really enjoy our visits there. As for the car - yes!! Unlike Washington DC and other large cities Richmond is easy to navigate. Even for me, and I am pretty terrible at navigating according to my husband :)
