I just recently found this place. Looks like a great place to visit. Its just 3hrs from where I live. So its close by. Was wondering has anyone visited lately? My hubby is really into Civil War and I am into shopping, and we both love trying new restaurants. Do you think its worth the visit? Is it like an old western town?
Culpepper Va
Culpeper (one p-not like the spice).
It is a cute town-I wouldn%26#39;t call it like an old western town.
I have blown through there more times than I can count. We have friends who live there, but I can%26#39;t say I have done any shopping aside from antiques. Culpeper has made top 100 small town lists and great places to live.
They have a tourist website http://www.visitculpeperva.com/
I can recommend this place to eat: http://www.thymeinfo.com/
I don%26#39;t think it would be enough to consume an entire day, but if you wanted to put it into a road trip of a day or two and include some other similar towns with Civil War history, it would be a good stop.
Warrenton Virginia is nice. It has a good old-town area with lots of eclectic shops.
Culpepper VaA WESTERN town? You mean like with cowboys and saloons and shoot-outs on the street? No. It%26#39;s a modern small city. It%26#39;s scenic and has good historical buildings and battlefields nearby.
Is Warrenton close to Culpeper? What towns are worth stopping by that are close? Thanks for your reply!
Would we be better suited to just go to Williamsburg, for my history buff hubby?
If you follow 29 out of Northern VA you hit Warrenton before Culpeper. They are about 30 minutes apart.
Williamsburg is more geared to Colonial and Revolutionary War history. It isn%26#39;t a place for a Civil War buff.
There are all sorts of VA towns that have and older area and Civil War ties. Warrenton, Manassas, Leesburg, Fredericksburg...I can tell you all you want to know about Manassas, some about Warrenton and Leesburg. Others can as well.
What are you thinking of doing? A day road trip? A long weekend? A scenic drive with some stops?
Put Civil War in the search box at the top of the VA Forum and you will find all sorts of threads.
We have some Civil War sites in the area, but we do concentrate much more on the American Revolution. Other areas with Civil War sites include Richmond, Petersburg (Pamplin Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier), and Manassas/Bull Run.
I was thinking of doing a day trip or even a two day trip would be good.
I suggest a drive down Route 15 from Maryland/Point of Rocks to Leesburg. You can take 15 to VA 234 and go to the Manassas Battlefield. From there, take 29 out of the Battlefield west through Gainesville (nothing interesting there) and to Warrenton. From there, continue south/west on 29 to Culpeper.
If you wanted to make more of this, Charlottesville, VA is about another hour past Culpeper.
