My boyfriend and I are headed to Luray next weekend. We%26#39;re staying at the Mimslyn Inn Saturday and Sunday night and I%26#39;d like to get some solid ideas about activities.
We%26#39;ve been to the area once before and stayed one night at the Jordan Hollow Inn.
Here%26#39;s what I was considering:
- Yes... we%26#39;re going to go to the caverns (2 passes included in our 300 2 night package at the Inn).
- I like to go hiking, I%26#39;ve printed some ideas off of the Shenandoah National Park Website but I imagine we%26#39;ll drive to Skyline and pick one of the hikes that starts there.
- We have dinner reservations at Circa 21 Sunday night and I also thought we could eat at Artisan Grill or Southern Station Diner.
I want to skip the petting zoo and fly fishing but if anyone has other ideas I%26#39;d love to hear them. Maybe a picnic or some sort of canoeing or kayaking if we%26#39;re feeling ambitious. Does anyone have any great experiences hiking? I%26#39;d consider a winery, horseback riding, or some other sort of outdoor adventure but I don%26#39;t want to drive too far to get there.
Thanks in advance!
2 nights in Luray over Memorial Day
You can take Route 211 from Luray to Shenandoah NP, this will put you at milepost 31.5, Thornton Gap entrance. If you want to hike near that entrance, I would suggest deciding in advance if possible about the trails and going online to print out trail maps. SNP trails are usually well marked but it%26#39;s always a good idea to get lost WITH a map (I speak from experience). There is not a Visitors Center really close, Dickey Ridge VC is milepost 5 near Front Royal and Byrd VC is mp51 at Big Meadows. The Thornton Gap entrance station may have trail maps but plan to have them on arrival if possible. Here are a few short of trails to consider:
MP39.1 Little Stony Man Cliffs 1 mile roundtrip and wonderful views!
MP50.7 Dark Hollow Falls, most popular trail, waterfalls
MP36.4 The Pinnacle 2.4 mile roundtrip
If you have questions about a specific trail, post again, there are several forum participants that are familiar with SNP trails.
Happy trails
