We are attending a wedding at the Doubletree HOtel in Charlottesville this weekend and driving from NJ . Directions take us off 81 South at Winchester to 522 then to 231 to 29. What are these highways like? any and all suggestions will be much appreciated!

I agree that if you%26#39;re going to take 81, then avoid getting off on the local roads and take 81 straight to 64 E. They are major highways but are more direct routes.

My first thought was the same as laura%26#39;s...but this is Memorial Weekend with everyone leaveing cities and heading to the beaches so maybe 95%26#39;s not the best route. 81 can be beautifully scenic.
Linda, out of curiousity,at what point does your mapping put you ON to 81 coming from NJ?
Perhaps your mapping site was on %26#39;scenic route%26#39; as far as the 522 and 231 goes. Those winding little mountain roads...they%26#39;d take longer than continuing in a straight shot down 81...still seeing cows and barns and farms and distant blue mountains on both sides...to, as laura suggested, Rt. 64. Rt. 64 is a nice straight newer, wide road, another straight shot east to Charlottesville.
Not too long after you get on 64E there%26#39;s an especially magnificent view on the south side...your right as you come. When I go that way I always forget to note exactly where but I think it%26#39;s around where Skyline Dr. intersects. There%26#39;s a waterway.
