That is the route we will be driving through VA next month. Anything along the way that would make a nice stop to take a break and stretch our legs? Something that wont take too long but the kids will enjoy? Thanks.
Route 522/66/95/295/64If I%26#39;m understanding your route correctly, I don%26#39;t recommend I-66 to I-95, if your goal is to head south. The traffic into DC can be murder. Instead get off I-66 at Rt 17 and take that south to I-95 in Fredericksburg, or just pick up Rt 17 in Winchester. Rt 17 is a 4 lane divided highway with just a couple of lights. It will save you much time and aggravation.
How old are your kids?
Route 522/66/95/295/64Thanks! The kids are 16 and 11.
Crystal Caverns, near Strasburg is not too far off your route, soon after you enter VA. http://www.waysideofva.com/crystalcaverns/
Winchester itself has a nice little downtown with a few things to do: http://www.visitwinchesterva.com/
If by next month you mean Memorial Day weekend, there%26#39;s a Strawberry Festival in Delaplane that weekend. http://www.delaplanestrawberryfestival.com/ If you%26#39;re not, the park where they hold it, Sky Meadows State Park is a nice stop with some short hikes your family might enjoy.
If your family has not visited any of the Civil War battlefields in VA, you might want to check one or more of those out. Near Fredericksburg, there are 3: Wilderness, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. http://www.nps.gov/frsp/fredhist.htm
Hope this gives you some ideas. Enjoy your visit.
