Memorial Day Trip to Williamsburg VA

Hello,

I am trying to visit Williamsburg VA around memorial day (maybe 3/4 days) and was looking for options to get there. We are from Northern NJ.

I see from various posts that I could drive up to Cape May, take a ferry to Lewis, then drive through various towns to get to the Chesepeake Bay bridge and over to Williamsburg. Question is, how long does the whole thing take (from Lewis to Williamsburg) and is it recommended for that weekend (considering it would be busy).

I somehow want to have the Bay Bridge as part of our itenerary, so I thought this option might work, but wouldn%26#39;t consider it if it was too long/costly.

thanks

Personally, I would not do it unless I had a very specific reason, like I wanted to stop in Assateague or Atlantic City, or REALLY wanted to experience a car ferry.

It will add at least 3 hours to your trip, not counting the time waiting for the ferry, loading onto the ferry, and offloading from the ferry.

The ferry and BB-Tunnel tolls will add extra cost to your trip as well; there are tolls on I-95, but still less than your route.

I make the trip back and forth from NJ to Richmond often and I generally take I-95/NJ Turnpike, occasionally detouring to Rt 301 at Newark DE to bypass Baltimore and DC if I%26#39;m in that area near rush hour.

My best advice to you on the way down is to leave extremely early in the morning because traffic will be a bear that weekend. Even going Eastern Shore, you will hit traffic going to the DE and MD beaches that will slow you down.

I would still take 95-DE and then pick up 13 south. If you can, try to leave NJ on Thurs and come back on Tues. If you can%26#39;t leave on Thur, at least consider heading back north on Tuesday. My parents have done this many years going back to DE from visiting us in VA Beach-really works nicely to avoid holiday traffic.
