We are planning a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, and we want to take an evening ghost walk. The web site calendar shows a program titled ';Ghosts Among Us,'; but that doesn%26#39;t sound like the fantastic ghost tour we took a couple of years ago when we were there. I remember it started in front of a tavern near the old Capitol. Can someone help?
Colonial Williamsburg Ghost Walk
The program you are referring to is the Colonial Williamsburg Tavern Ghost Walk. It is an evening program that start in front of Shields Tavern on Duke of Gloucester Street, inthe restored area of Colonial Williamsburg. The reviews here and on other sites about Williamsburg rank it highly; it is family friendly and the guides like to engage the members of the audience, young and old, as they walk through the streets of the restored area, telling interesting and fun stories about spirits in the old town.
Ghosts Among Us is another Colonial Williamsburg program -- it used to be called ';Legends, Mysteries and Myths'; but last fall the name was changed to ';Ghosts Among Us.'; This change has caused much confusion for visitors -- because the new program has the word ';ghosts'; in it, many people think it%26#39;s the Tavern Ghost Walk -- which it isn%26#39;t, and is too bad, because the Ghost Walk gets rave reviews fron those who take it.
The Tavern Ghost Walk can be reserved at the Colonial Williamsburg reservations line, 1-800-HISTORY, at any tavern, at the CW Visitor Center, or at the CW hotels. Here%26#39;s a link to a CW web page about the program: www.history.org/visit/images/ghostwalks.pdf
Hope this helps clear up the confusion. Enjoy your visit.
Colonial Williamsburg Ghost Walk
The Colonial Williamsburg website only lists a night tour called, ';Lanthorn Tour'; which is a tour of 4 trade sites. Does this tour mention anything regarding ghosts?
Which tour would be better, the Lanthorn tour or the Ghosts Amongst Us tour? They are not offering the Tavern Ghost tour in late April.
Thanks.
Did you call 1-800-HISTORY and ask about the Tavern Ghost Tour? It is not listed in the evening programs because it is not an offering from the Historic Area Division, but rather run by the Hospitality side of the Foundation. As far as I know, the Tavern Ghost tour is offered nightly. If it%26#39;s not offered when you%26#39;ll be here, and you want a ghost walk, participate in Ghosts Among Us. The Lanthorn Tour is more a ';trades shops by night'; walking tour.
Zoey is correct -- the Tavern Ghost Walk is offered every night; it is often not listed on the historic program calendar. Call the numbers mentioned to reserve a tour or pick up tickets at any of the places mentioned in my earlier post. What we%26#39;re discussing here is part of the confusion mentioned earlier-- Ghosts Among Us is not the Tavern Ghost Walk, and Ghosts Among Us is not open every night like the Tavern Walk is.
Thank you Zoey and BixDoc for clearing things up regarding the Ghost tours. I will call them in the morning and reserve the Tavern Ghost Tour.
Does the Tavern Ghost Tour go into the taverns? Sounds like it should.
Brayette
The Tavern walk does not go into any buildings -- but it is a great tour.
I called the 800-History number today and made reservations for the ';Ghost Walk at Shields Tavern'; tour. That is what the lady on the phone is calling it. She mentioned the tour does NOT go into any taverns as BixDoc already mentioned. Sounds like the best night tour for a first time CW visitor like myself.
Thanks BixDoc and Zoey for your help.
I don%26#39;t like to complain before we even get to Wiliamsburg, but could the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation make this any more confusing?
Frankly, I find everything about the web site confusing. They don%26#39;t make it easy to plan a trip! Calling the ';800'; number isn%26#39;t any better. I called (twice) and e mailed to get a vacation planner and have yet to receive one.
I am grateful for all who take the time to post here at Trip Advisor. I have given up on the Foundation and planned my trip using the information found here.
Thanks to everyone!
Maxx
Please don%26#39;t let the confusion over the website, the calendar, etc. dampen your planning or your visit to Williamsburg. Unfortunately, these have been issues for a long time -- Colonial Williamsburg has their own way of doing things, but it should not detract from your visit here. Remember, practically everything at CW can be arranged once you arrive. Sometimes during peak holiday periods taverns will completely book up for prime seating times, but otherwise events and evening programs can usually be found available.
We booked our evening programs once we were at Colonial Williamsburg. We just went to the phones at the visitors center and one person arranged every thing. Have a great trip!
