Williamsburg, VA - July 2009 Family Vacation

Hi,

Thank goodness for this forum! I need some assistance please. I%26#39;m considering a small budget friendly family vacation to Williamsburg, VA in mid July. I have 2 teenagers and was going to do Busch Gardens, Water County, and Kings Dominion. The place I was going to stay was a timeshare rental with a choice of Greensprings or Powathan. Are there any other family activies to do besides the amusement parks in the area? I was also considering a visit to VA Beach however I%26#39;m not certain how far it is from the rental property. I%26#39;ve gotten mixed reviews on VA Beach so I%26#39;m a little hesitant. If I choose not to stay at Greensprings the other hotel I was looking at was the Embassey Suites looks newly remodeled and also offers a free hot breakfast (cost effective) and the atrium looks beautufil. Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated. I%26#39;m trying to stay within a $1500 budget and I will be driving in from PA

Hello, are you interested in American History? Let us know, lots of history in tidewater virginia.

Maybe just 1 day but the vacation is more so amusement parks.

I love Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Jamestowne, but if that%26#39;s not really your thing, I might suggest Jamestown Settlement instead. There are replicas of the three ships that brought the first men of the Virginia Company to the New World in 1607, a Powhatan Indian village, and a reconstruction of the fort at Jamestown to explore. There is also an outstanding museum in the Visitors Center at Jamestown Settlement.

For non-history oriented ideas, Williamsburg has miniature golf, go-karts, and a Ripley%26#39;s Believe It or Not, plus a huge outlet mall, Prime Outlets. Getting to Virginia Beach will take about an hour or possible more, depending on time of day, traffic, etc. There are some boat tours that get you close to some of the naval installation, etc.

Yorktown has a beach along the York River, and if you drive there on the Colonial Parkway, it%26#39;s very scenic. There are history-oriented sites in Yorktown, and there is also the Riverwalk area, with a couple of good restaurants, ice cream (Ben %26amp; Jerry%26#39;s, IIRC), and some unique shops.

Hope that gives you some ideas!

Hi Shumway,

I think you%26#39;d be sorry if you did not take your teenagers to Virginia Beach. Years ago it was ';seedy';, but is now a spectacular family area. The beach is wide and clean. The boardwalk goes the length of the beach, and there are bands out in the evening all along it. It is about an hour from Williamsburg, but don%26#39;t try to go during rush hour, as traffic can be very heavy. Other than parking, it%26#39;s a ';free'; day, and nice down time from the amusement parks.

Hope you make it down there. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have fun.

Enjoy your trip.
