driving and car rental

We will be flying into Reagan on the Saturday of Memorial weekend arriving at 2:30pm. We plan to drive to Williamsburg from the airport. How will the traffic be and any ideas how long of a drive that will be? After several days in Williamsburg we will drive back to DC for several days. We will be staying at the JW Marriot. Should we drop off the rental car back at the airport and take a taxi to the hotel or are there car returns around the area of the hotel? Thanks

The drive from Reagan Airport on a Saturday afternoon should not be too bad, as you are not travelling at a prime commuting time. The trip is all on major highways and should take no more than 2 -- 2 /12 hours.

There are several rental car agency offices in downtown D.C., and the J.W. Marriott is very centrally located. However, depending on when you are returning to D.C., it is probably easier to drop the rental car back at the airport and then take the Metro to your hotel; driving in D.C. can be a nightmare if you don%26#39;t know your way around, and the Metro is very convenient.

Do not be surprised if there are slowdowns on southbound I-95 south of Springfield all the way to Fredericksburg. This stretch of highway seems to have chronic traffic no matter if it%26#39;s a weekend or evening commute. You might also see smaller pockets of slowdowns on I-395 southbound, even on the weekends. I would probably adjust the time to 2.5-3 hours to Williamsburg.

I say this not to scare, because it definitely isn%26#39;t the worst time of day/week to travel in DC, but just so you%26#39;re not expecting completely free-flowing open roads. Once you%26#39;re south of Fredericksburg, the road opens up and is fine.
