avoiding DC traffic?

Hi All: was hoping someone could assist...I plan to drive from South Jersey to VA Beach for memorial Day weekend (leaving Friday morning, returning Monday afternoon). Any tips on avoiding Washington DC traffic? Someone mentioned taking a ferry? Any info in that regard?

What with all the waiting, loading, and unloading, the ferry doesn%26#39;t save you any time, and is pretty expensive. Your best bet is to either time your trip so that you get to DC no later than noon, or when you get to Delaware, take Rt 896/301 South. Rt 301 will take you all the way around Baltimore and DC. You will hit stretches where there are a lot of traffic lights, but overall there is less traffic. If you have EZPass you can get through the Chesapeake Bay toll bridge quickly. You can get off Rt 301 near Bowling Green (there are signs in that area suggesting this) and get on I-95 until you get to I-295, which will take you around Richmond.

Whenever I go to Philadelphia I take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. I%26#39;ve done both the I-95 route and the Bay Bridge route and the Bay Bridge is hands-down the less contentious route, even though the Bay Bridge is $10.

Don%26#39;t know anything about New Jersey ferries, though.

The DC route can be fine but like the previous poster said- timing is EVERYTHING!

Avoid the traffic by going 13. I would not go 113 due to traffic to DE beaches. The ferry is nice but will add to your trip.

We travel from the northern suburbs of Phila. and take I95 south to Rt 1 south and then Rt 13 south all the way to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Relaxing drive and saves time. Have a great trip

Am going to have to say the same as everyone else. Take the Eastern Shore route 13 down to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. It%26#39;s your best bet.
