Official CW walking ghost tours are tips expected?

We are scheduled for a ghost tour and a lanthorn tour and read something somewhere that in other areas of the country (Gettysburg was mentioned) a tip is expected after a ghost tour. I had not thought about this and was wondering what the custom is at CW. Thanks!

Official CW walking ghost tours are tips expected?

No, no tips for the CW tours.

Official CW walking ghost tours are tips expected?

we always tip. good service deserves one. of course it is your personal chocie if you tip or not - many do not tip for service.

We just took the Ghosts Among Us tour. We were led to 3 different houses by one person but the stories were told by 3 other people. Who would you have tipped in that case Bridgefan1?

When we visit Key West, the guides are very straightforward about wanting tips. They are expected and we do tip. We didn%26#39;t notice any mention of tipping before during or after our walk in CW. I agree, go with what you feel. It never hurts to offer.

The CW Tavern Ghost Walk guides conduct the entire tour and they do receive tips. They are not allowed to solicit them, but they may accept them. We have always tipped on the ghost walk and noticed many others do, too.

Hope this helps.

I%26#39;m curious, is the Ghost Tours included in your purchase price?

No, they are a separate ticket item.

Are Leesburg and Lightfoot the same city???

Are Leesburg and Lightfoot the same city???

Are Leesburg and Lightfoot the same city???

There is an area of Williamsburg called Lightfoot. Not sure if maybe that is the area you are looking for? Can you give some more specifics on what you are looking for, or how/where Lightfoot was referenced, so we could better assist you?

Are Leesburg and Lightfoot the same city???

There is a restaurant in Leesburg called The Lightfoot.

I was curious because some towns changed their names waaaaay back when. Leesburg was once named George Town but embraced the Lee family in its name when it became the county seat sometime after 1758.

Otherwise as far as I know Lightfoot and Leesburg are sort of on opposite ends. As someone already asked, I%26#39;d be interested to know how you are connecting the two names for the same city.

Recommended Reservations for Pony Penning Week?

We%26#39;re coming in the Sunday before Pony Penning and leaving the next Saturday and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for things to get deposits on and reserved? We%26#39;ve got a charter for watching the pony swim and bike rentals for the whole week, but what else? It%26#39;s two adults and a right at two-year-old boy. Looks like there%26#39;s a cool playground, but I%26#39;m guessing no reservations needed there.

Recommended Reservations for Pony Penning Week?

You have a place to stay reserved? That%26#39;s about all that%26#39;s required. Have a good time!

Recommended Reservations for Pony Penning Week?

Basically this is the most crowded week of the year on Chincoteague. You will need reservations at restaurants and any activity will have a short wait - but the island is never as crowded as a major resort.

You can find lists of restaurants and reserve a couple of days in advance. If you want a riding lesson at the Pony Centre reserve early.

The main thing is to have a confirmed place to stay and if you want to see the swim a charter. Bring warm clothes to wear -- when you leave for the swim it will be dark and cool -- wear swimsuits underneath. Bring warm drinks for the first part of your wait, and cold drinks for the last part -- you will be out on the water for at least 4 hours and maybe longer.

It is a busy time, but we were there for Pony Penning week in 2007, and had reservations for AJ%26#39;s on the Creek. All other times we walked in and were seated within minutes for dinner, and never had a wait for lunch. That%26#39;s why I said if you have a place to stay, you don%26#39;t really need other reservations.

We were there two different years in kayaks. Its a fun week. The crowds start thinning out after the swim. Make sure you get to see the ponies in the pens after the swim. Its a rare opportunity to see them all. Also on Friday the swim back is fun but has only 30 or so ponies.

It think its on Monday that they bring the northern herd down the beach. We didn%26#39;t get to see that but it sounded like fun. When you%26#39;re there, check on it.

Here%26#39;s a link to stories and some decent pictures of the two we were there for.

www.alandsuejohnson.com/pony_penning.htm

There%26#39;s a button for 2003 and 2004. Return to Assateague will show you the pictures of the other things we%26#39;ve seen over there.

We had a great time both years. Make sure you get to the auction for a while. The excitement in some of the kids is amazing.

You definately want to have reservations at a motel or cottage. Many of the hotels have higher rates that week so you may find a rental cottage is a more affordable option for you. A friend of ours has several small rentals that you may want to look into at www.chincoteaguecottages.com

Have a great week!

Special gift card offer question

We%26#39;re most likely going to be booking the special Williamsburg Lodge package. It includes a $150 gift card which I am so confused about. Its hard for me to get a hold of them with my schedule and the 3 hours difference.

So its says, ';The Colonial Williamsburg Gift Card is good throughout our resort collection, including The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg and the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, and may also be used in our restaurants and taverns.';

Does that mean that I can use it at their shops? What about Huzzah, is that there restraunt? I couldn%26#39;t find it on their site, but I LOVE their food! =)

Thanks for all the help!

Special gift card offer question

Looks like Huzzah is included - the restaurant is listed on the CW website and it is on the property.

Note the special offer expires April 3, 2009.

Thanks! I sure hope so! =)

  • Help with choices please!(Lodge vs Governors Inn)

We went to Colonial Williamsburg last year and were completely in love! Its all I%26#39;ve been able to talk about for a while now. We went the last week of August, the weather was perfect, hardly any crowds, cheaper plane tickets, etc.(now don%26#39;t steal my perfect week by going! haha just kidding)! But anyways, we stayed at the Governors Inn, we got an amazing price, we loved it for the money, and the continental breakfast was great!

We are now looking into the Williamsburg Lodge too. There is a very special package for a $150 gift card, admissions ticket, and 15% off most purchases at CW. Our budget is pretty tight, yet this seems like a good deal and a big upgrade from the Governors Inn.

Its $89 a night at the Governors Inn(including continental breakfast and admissions ticket I believe) and its $129 a night for us to stay at the Williamsburg Lodge(including $150 gift card, admissions ticket and 15% off CW purchase deal). So in reality, which one would you consider the better deal considering somewhat of a tight budget? I%26#39;m bummed the Williamsburg Lodge doesn%26#39;t include a continental breakfast, because that saved us quite a bit of money and was very enjoyable.

One more question, you know how you can get free juice and lemonade at the Governors Inn(also free fruit!) throughout the day? Is that available at the Lodge?

Help with choices please!(Lodge vs Governors Inn)

NEVER MIND! Sorry about that. I just called up the Governors Inn and they said they will be closed for renovation when we are considering going. BUMMER! =(

But if anyone could still help me with the last question, I would be so appreciative! :0)

Help with choices please!(Lodge vs Governors Inn)

I%26#39;ve never been offered free juice or lemonade during prior stays at the Lodge.

But, if you call, I%26#39;m sure they would be happy to answer your question.

By the way, the $129/night package rate is a very good deal for the Lodge(in my opinion). Just go out the door and either hop a shuttle or walk a SHORT distance and you are literally in the historic area.

    Enjoy your visit!

    Colonialgirl

    Thank you! :0)

I%26#39;m glad to hear thats a good deal! I%26#39;m excited to (hopefully) go! YAY!

    Take the deal!

We usually stay at either the Woodlands or the Lodge, and LOVE the Lodge for the extremely convienient access to the historic area.

Tutuandtoeshoes, that package at the Lodge with the $150 giftcard, free passes and $15 discout card expires April 3. When are you planning to come? You may want to check the website after that time to see what packages are available for the summer. The Governors Inn will not be open regularly, only during special events.

The old Lodge always had large wooden bowls of fruit, usually apples in the lobby and corridors for guests to help themselves, but I have not seen that treat in the new Lodge. But the Lodge is a great place to stay - the historic area is just steps away and there is a shuttle stop out the front door. Hotel guest passes will be $29.95 per adult and $15.95 per youth (6-17) for the length of stay as of April 4. The Continental breakfast at the Lodge is $10 per person over 5 years.

Thank you very much! We%26#39;re planning to book it tomorrow hopefully! I%26#39;m stressing out trying to make sure when can get everything booked in time. We%26#39;re going on another trip in June, so its hard to be planning both! Thanks again! =)

  • iad to Round Hill transportation? Ride Fly?

I%26#39;ve just booked an airport shuttle service-RideFly- to pick me up on the return leg of my trip. My normal picker uppers can%26#39;t get the time off and the last time I had this problem it cost me $66.00 to just get to Sterling on the Dulles Flyer cab, but it was snowing.

Has anyone used RideFly? They%26#39;ve quoted me a price of $40.00 which seems extremely reasonable. My fear is that I%26#39;ll either be stranded at the airport or there will be all kinds of extra charges added on.

iad to Round Hill transportation? Ride Fly?

That price is certainly right! We use a private driver and I think it is double what you are paying....I%26#39;d have to ask my hubby what the exact price is. I have never heard of RideFly. Good luck!

iad to Round Hill transportation? Ride Fly?

I%26#39;m home and the RideFly went fairly well. RideFly is a booking agent for SuperShuttle and if I had it to do over again I would book directly with SuperShuttle.

The airport to door service in Round Hill was honored at the $40.00 price-which is very reasonable. The only problem was the driver of the shuttle was understandably upset that he was being sent on a long trip for one passenger. Apparently they wait in line like taxi drivers do and hope they get a good fair. The shuttle in front of him had 6 passengers going to BWI at $70.00 a piece. After a 10 minute arguement he had with his dispatcher in a foreign language, he took off in a surly mood but drove safely. I gave him a good tip which made him smile but it was the only communication we had.

I%26#39;d book them again as it is the only way they will keep doing business with western Loudoun county.

When to book July accommodation in Alexandria

I am looking for two room accommodation ( ie suite) in Old Town in early July. I can get the Holiday Inn suite for approx $240 a night advance purchase, or 2 rooms at the travelodge for even cheaper; should I grab one of these now and pay or are there likely to be bargains nearer the time? My sense is that Old Town is usually very popular, so there are unlikely to be last minute discounts...please advise. Thaks you.

Where is the best coffee, espresso, cappucino?

Is there any place better than Starbuck%26#39;s--a place where the baristas really know the art of making special coffees with high quality beans? A place that doesn%26#39;t serve everything in disposable cups is preferable. Often universities have these kinds of places--anything over near William and Mary? Thanks!

Where is the best coffee, espresso, cappucino?

I%26#39;m not a coffee aficionado, but Aroma%26#39;s, on Prince George Street, near the college, a block from Duke of Gloucester Street, does a variety of coffee drinks that may be what you%26#39;re looking for. Most of them are served out of disposables, however. The Blue Talon Bistro, also on Prince George Street, serves illy coffee, but I don%26#39;t know if they do coffee drinks.

  • House rentals

    Hi,

I did a search for house rentals in this forum however I have a quick question. I am looking for a place to stay that houses 7 people and is walking distance to the beach and night life. We are planning on staying May 22-27 which is not a full typical week. Are there any places that can accomodate our dates? I have looked at several places plus the listings on vrbo.com.

I was wondering if other people had any ideas.

    Thanks!

    Joyce

    House rentals

Have you clicked on ';Vacation REntals'; along the left side here? There are some condos, cottages and houses in the north end, resort area and Sandbridge area.

As to the shorter period....do you mean 6 nights? Or 5? You might contact the owner/company at anyplace you like and see what they say. May is not yet the height of the season and they may have openings. (I%26#39;d think between the early stay and the economy there%26#39;d be something you could work with)

Alternatively, you might try some of the condo/apt size accommodations listed at www.vbhma.com When you get to the site, click on accommodations, then click at the room info on ';full kitchen'; (just for example...it%26#39;s a %26#39;house-type%26#39; feature) and below that section, click on ';suite';. You%26#39;ll get some of the larger accommodations such as Turtle Cay, Boardwalk Resort Hotel and Villas, Ocean Beach Club, etc. You can figure out how many bedrooms you need/will a living room sleep sofa do, etc.

Let us know how you get on as you fine tune and how else we can help.

We also intend to drive down from Richmond just to do historic Williamsburg with the kids for 1 day.

Our intention is to buy the Bausch/WC tkts from the Bausch website where you can get 7 days access..Or does anyone know of a better option..

    Where is good to ....

There are many places to stay in the immediate vicinity of Williamsburg. I suggest you start with the reviews and deals of lodgings that appear just to the left of this forum.

Typically the Busch Gardens/Water Country website offers the best ticket prices; remember it is usually not necessary to buy the tickets in advance, unless the price specifically states that it is a ';web-only'; special.

    Enjoy your visit.

We would like nice accomadation with a very reasonable rate ! Think USD100 per room per night is our budget... Any recommendations ?/

    tks

Many hotels contract with Busch Gardens to sell discount passes for them. You can usually get the passes at a few dollars off purchasing at a hotel that re-sells for the park.

As far as the room %26amp; rate goes, what time of year were you looking to travel?

We will be in the US between 12th Jun %26amp; 28th Jun..

That time-frame is a peak time for this area. If you can%26#39;t find the rates you are looking for directly in Williamsburg, many travelers will end up staying outside of the immediate %26#39;touristy%26#39; area to do so. Newport News neighbors Williamsburg, and is an easy straight shot down the interstate, about 20 minutes or so. You may find lower rates there. When I travel, I find that I avoid the headaches of in-town traffic, %26amp; save time %26amp; money by staying just outside touristy areas, but it depends on your own preferences of course. If so, I would suggest a hotel convenient to the interstate, such as the Mulberry Inn, Point Plaza or the Holiday Inn Hotel %26amp; Suites- those are all nice hotels with great AAA ratings. The Mulberry Inn would be about 15 minutes away from Williamsburg. Their rooms include a deluxe hot continental breakfast, %26amp; they have an exercise room, business center, %26amp; outdoor pool. The Holiday Inn %26amp; Point Plaza would be about another 5-10 minutes away, and also each have an exercise room %26amp; business center, but in addition also offer the option of suites %26amp; each have a full service restaurant %26amp; indoor pool. The Point Plaza also has a nice newly remodeled lounge %26amp; also sells the discounted attraction tickets, including to Busch Gardens.

Opinions on Washington DC from Fredericksburg

I am going to be travelling round virginia for 9 days in June. I will be basing myself in Danville got family there, planned on travelling up the skyline drive then accross and stay a night in Washington then down to Fredericksburg for a day.

Problem is parking in washington, would you suggest going straight to Fredericksburg and staying there for two nights and travel into Washington on the train then back at night.

Also any recommendations on things to see and do would be great.

    Thanks

    James

Opinions on Washington DC from Fredericksburg

Why don%26#39;t you stay somewhere like Arlington, where parking is available, the Metro into DC takes about 10 minutes, and there%26#39;s plenty to do and places to eat in the evening. If you stay in Fredericksburg, 3 hours of each day that you could be sightseeing you%26#39;ll spend on the train with all the other commuters. If you want to go back to your room before you go out to eat, you can do that if you stay in Arlington.

Opinions on Washington DC from Fredericksburg

There are a number of hotels in the Springfield area (Courtyard by Marriott, Days Inn, Hilton, etc.), and many of them probably offer free shuttles to the Springfield metro stop.

Trip 4/14-4/18 with 3 kids - recommendations please!

We will be heading to Williamsburg in a couple of weeks for a short midweek vacation after Easter. We are staying at the Historic Powhatan Resort because we were able to get a three bedroom for under $900 for the entire trip. At any rate, our kids are 11, 3 and 1. I%26#39;m looking for any advice on where to go and what to do. We are planning one day at Busch Gardens and want to do CV, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Any advice on what to do while in the places above, where to eat, activities, etc. would be appreciated. This is our first trip out as a family of five, so I%26#39;m hopeful that some other parents might be able to steer me in a good direction. Thanks!

Trip 4/14-4/18 with 3 kids - recommendations please!

Hello, there are 2 Jamestown sites. One is the Historic Jamestowne Island. This is the first permanent English speaking colony in North America. Settled 13 years before the Mayflower landed!! There is a great museum filled with artifacts discovered during the archealogical digs that have been going on there since around 1993, I believe. There are walking tours, statues of Pocahontas and John Smith, an original church tower dating from the mid 1600%26#39;s,a nice gift shoppe and a small cafe. There is also a loop drive that goes into the woods where you can see wild life and imagine what it was like when the settlers first landed.

The other site is the Jamestown Settlement. This would be a great place for your kids. There are reproductions of 3 ships, (you can board at least one), a native American village, and the James Fort. A very hands on place where your kids can grind corn, and try on armor and clothes. The Native American village huts are filled with articles that they would have used. There is also a wonderful museum there as well as a restaurant and gift shoppe.

The Glasshouse is located right before you get to the Jamestowne Island. This is very interesting and won%26#39;t take very long. There are costumed interpreters blowing glasswear.

If you just have time for one of the Jamestowns, I would suggest the Settlement because I think your children would enjoy that one the best.

Hope you enjoy this area and have lots of fun on your trip. from Mary.

Trip 4/14-4/18 with 3 kids - recommendations please!

    Hi Sayds19,

Wow, first vacation as a family of five! Quite exciting.

MaryMac gave a great description of the Jamestowns for you. You should be able to do both of those in one full day, they are fairly nearby to each other. Jamestown Settlement has a cafe on site where you could conveniently eat lunch. My son is 8 years old %26amp; has been several times- he went for the first time when he was 2 years old, and has always loved the hands on interactive experiences and was (%26amp; still is) especially wowed by the ship replicas you can get on!

For CW, I would recommend going to the Calendar of Events page on their website to check out what is happening during the dates of your visit. It is such a large area, with so many different overlapping or simultaneous programs going on in different areas of it each day- it%26#39;s easy to miss something you may have wanted to see or participate in if you just go and %26#39;wing it%26#39;. I would also suggest calling the Visitor Center to have them mail you a %26#39;This Week%26#39; brochure for the week you will be attending (I like those even better than the website calendar). They are invaluable in helping to plan your visit. They have detailed info on the times/locations of events %26amp; programs, as well as have the programs labeled that are geared especially for kids. It also has a detailed coded map of the area on it %26amp; very helpful general info.

Busch Gardens has fabulous things for all ages. Great coasters %26amp; shows %26amp; eateries. (The eateries are fun for the experience %26amp; convenience, but can get pricey. So if you are looking to save some money, you can leave the park to go to McDonalds and still get back in same-day with a handy hand stamp) The new Sesame Street Forest of Fun is opening in April, hopefully by the time your family arrives. It will have really great things for your younger ones.

The Yorktown Victory Center %26amp; the Yorktown Visitor Center %26amp; Battlefields aren%26#39;t really located near any of the other attractions you mentioned you were visiting, (although there is a shuttle that will run you between this area and the Jamestowns, but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend necessarily trying to squeeze in both the Jamestowns %26amp; the Yorktowns on the same day- it is possible, but it would really crunch it). You can really probably do the Yorktowns in a half-day. You could do those the first half of one of your days, and then go back to CW or Busch Gardens a second time (most people are itching to go back after just one day at either of those places anyway!) for the second half of your day if you were planning on getting multi-day passes. Or instead, if the weather is nice, after your visit of the Yorktowns, you could have a fun family picnic on the Yorktown Battlefields or on the Yorktown Beach at Riverwalk Landing, which is a super-nice new walking/shopping area they have now. (My son %26amp; I love going to this area to walk %26amp; go to the beach) http://www.riverwalklanding.com/

They also have a fun trolley that runs that area.

Hope that helps. Have a great time!

    Hi Sayds,

    The best ice cream you will ever eat is at ';Handel%26#39;s';

on Route 60 (Williamsburg Road) across the street and about 1/2 mile east of The Pottery. Look for the blue roof/awnings. I drive there from Richmond a couple of times a month for my ';fix';. It is spectacular!!! I also like ';Gus%26#39;s Hot Dog King'; for great chili dogs. It is also on Route 60, but closer to the hotels - is on the right as you are leaving Williamsburg - past the Aberdeen Barn, and past Wendy%26#39;s - across the street from the Yankee Candle store.

    Have fun!

    4. Poppy Hill Tuscan Kitchen -- www.ciaopoppyhill.com I love this place. They use fresh ingredients, much being organic and locally grown. They have gotten wonderful reviews.

    5. Augustine%26#39;s -- toprestaurants.com/virginia/augustines.htm This one is a bit pricey.

    6. Fredericks -- www.frederickstheloft.com I%26#39;ve never eaten here, but they have a popular music venue upstairs that is non-smoking

    7. Castiglia%26#39;s -- Italian

Any input is greatly appreciated. But we%26#39;re definitely not going to do a ghost tour. If any of these are slightly scary, please tell me. We%26#39;re not looking for anything like that. Thanks! =)

YAY! We did it! Also....advice please on programs!

If you don%26#39;t want a ghost tour, skip Listen My Children. For your little dancer (tutusandtoeshoes?), Dance, Our Dearest Diversion, or Evening of Dance at the Palace. I think the Bits and Bridles tour is terrific - behind the scenes look at the rare breeds, horses, etc., including a tour of the stables. I%26#39;d also recommend Dean Shostak%26#39;s Crystal Concert, usually given at the Kimball Theatre. There%26#39;s a child-centric presentation at the Playhouse on the Palace Green that%26#39;s quite good, but I don%26#39;t remember the name. And be sure to spend some time at Great Hopes Plantation.

YAY! We did it! Also....advice please on programs!

Thanks for the info! I%26#39;ll skip that one then. I%26#39;m sure we would both enjoy the dancing! =) Ballet is her thing, but I%26#39;d bet this would be great too! I%26#39;ll look into the other things!

Sorry, but what%26#39;s the Great Hopes Plantation? I%26#39;m not sure if we ever got to that last time.

Great Hopes Plantation is between the Visitors Center and the Historic Area. You can walk to it on a footpath. At Great Hopes, rural trades and ways of life are depicted. You may see Ossabow Island hogs, tobacco in a field, and other crops and livestock representing how middling farmers worked and lived in the 18th century.

Tutus, when you arrive, pick up a copy of the brocure entitled ';This Week in Colonial Williamsburg.'; It will list all of the ';special people'; as you call them, indicating where and when they will be present and what they will be discussing (freedom, slavery, etc.)

For an advance look at what%26#39;s happening, consult the CW website, www.HISTORY.org, click on ';calendar,'; and enter the dates you plan be here. While the calendar might not show exact detail about when and where the notable characters will be, it will give you an idea of who will be out and about.

Characters such as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington, Gowan Pamphlet, Martha Washington, etc. appear in places such as the Governor%26#39;s Palace Green, Mary Stith House, Raleigh Tavern, the Capitol and even on the streets. A group I was with had a delightful conversation with Patrick Henry, as he strolled down Duke of Gloucester Street, just the other day.

We also absolutely loved the Bits and Bridle%26#39;s tour. Also, Zoey is correct about Dean Shostak--he has wonderful musical programs. Even though there is probably a charge for them, they are worth it.

It is fun walking in the Historic area and finding sheep, oxen and horses in fields.

  • Hotels?

We are coming for a wedding the end of May. It seems that Days Inn is the only hotel in town??? Their reviews on tripadvisor are terrible!!!! Are they really that bad and is there any other options??? Any feedback is appreciated!!!

    Hotels?

These were recommended by the most recent poster on the Day%26#39;s Inn. Here%26#39;s their urls. (Usually the local family provides some info re accommodations for out of town guests. You might ask them for their choice or just google these further.)

I grew up in Colonial Beach. Although it has changed some, I can give you some insight.

The Riverview Inn, as it%26#39;s called now, is very old and I have no idea what it%26#39;s condition is and how it%26#39;s managed. Doc%26#39;s Motor Court is also quite old, but it is owned and run by a local family that has owned it from day one. Very nice people. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s clean and well maintained. It is also right on the water (well, across the stree). The other two are bed and breakfasts and could be very nice. The Bell House is a landmark in Colonial Beach. I didn%26#39;t know it had become a bed %26amp; breakfast, though. It also sits right on the water. I looks like it%26#39;s been renovated.

    Some other options:

    1. King George County on Rt. 301 near Dahlgren, VA has some hotels. There is a Naval Lab at Dahlgren that employs many people from the are. They also need to accommodate people on travel working at the Lab. That area is about 20 minutes from Colonial Beach.

    2. Fredericksburg, VA is another option. It%26#39;s about 35 miles from Colonial Beach. Fredericksburg has quite a number of hotels/motels with most chains represented. I currently reside in Fredericksburg.

    UPDATE - check www.colonialbeach.org

    Horseback riding

Is there a stable close to the beach (3-5 miles) that provides horseback riding service?

    Horseback riding

Do you want horseback riding on the beach? I heard stories back and forth about someone doing that/not doing it because the season they were allowed was too short. The website I thought I had for them was not up. So I asked a few friends and one even figured out who it was and called and called me back. There is horseback riding on the beach this year till 5/12. Till then this one company will be on the beach some weekends, also by reservtion and also probably ever day during spring break time. They%26#39;re trying to get the permit to be at Fort Story during the summer.

Call this number and see if they%26#39;ll be at the beach when you are. If not, ask them about horseback riding otherwise in other places you might be interested in:

    (757) 289-5470 I think my friend said it was called Horses on the Beach.

Hey, I got curiouser and curiouser and just googled that name. They%26#39;re on that list craig has. It mentions they%26#39;re on 24th St on nice weekends, some weekday afternoons (other times by appt which is a safer bet anyway)

They also give another number and an email address for you:

    beach_rides_va@yahoo.com or 757-493-1449

Write back and let us know how you get on with all this.

    7-4-1 Pass

I%26#39;ve just updated the Busch Gardens ';inside page,'; and I have a question. In past years, there has been a ';7-4-1'; or ';6-4-1'; pass offered. The former included Busch Gardens, Water Country, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown Victory Center, Yorktown Battlefield, Jamestown Settlement, and Historic Jamestowne. The latter excluded Water Country and was valid only when Water Country was closed, if I recall correctly. I%26#39;ve been searching the web, including the BG and CW websites, and have seen no mention of it for 2009. I%26#39;m hoping someone like BG_Dan might let us know if that particular pass has been discontinued. If it has, the ';inside page'; needs to be updated with that new information.

The current ';inside page'; can be found here: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g58313-d141842/Willia…

Staying in Alexandria - question about hotel and area

Booked the Courtyard by Marriott on Eisenhower - got it for 89 per night in June. Is this a safe place to stay, and how long would it take to get to DC by metro from this hotel. Any other helpful hints are appreciated - First time in DC only spending a day there and a day around Alexandria. Thinking of hitting the Duck tours, the Mall Memorials, and a lttle of the Smithsonian. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Staying in Alexandria - question about hotel and area

Courtyard is just a few blocks from the Eisenhower (yellow) line. You got a great deal for June, and pretty safe location to boot. Only problem...one day%26#39;s not going to do much for you. Pick one and stick with it...I%26#39;d suggest walking the mall to see the outdoor monuments and slip into one of the museums. Skip the duck tour since you are on such short time. Suggest instead, having dinner in Old Town and taking the Boat Shuttle to Georgetown for an impromptu cruise during the early evening hours its only $14 bucks round trip from Old Town to Georgetown.

Staying in Alexandria - question about hotel and area

thank you - thank cruise sounds like a great idea

Very good location and the price is a GREAT deal. I agree that you should not do the duck tour. Use the first day for monuments and if you aren%26#39;t tired use the second day to either drive or take the Tourmobile in the morning to Arlington Cemetery to see changing of the guard at Tomb of the Unknown and some of the other famous gravesites/monuments at Arlington and then spend the afternoon at Mt. Vernon, Washington%26#39;s Estate. If you can do the Mall monuments, Arlington, and Mt. Vernon you will definitely feel as if you have seen the highlights of DC. The short drive from Old Town to Mt. Vernon(8 miles) is lovely along the river. Enjoy!

Thank you - Sounds like a gret idea!

    Correct address for attractions?

I just bought an all day 4 site pass to Jamestown Settlement, Historic Jamestowne, Yorktown Victory Center and Yorktown Battlefield. Does anyone know the correct address to these locations? • Colonial Williamsburg Summer Saver Package

Colonial Williamsburg recently announced a package price for families planning to travel here this summer. It%26#39;s reminiscent of packages offered years ago, and may be a good deal for some. Here%26#39;s a link for anyone that%26#39;s interested: colonialwilliamsburgresort.com/packages/summ…

    Colonial Williamsburg Summer Saver Package

We came very close to booking this. It seemed like a great deal but we decided the Lodge came out to be a better deal. They were allowing us to buy the package for just two people AND add on a night. With our CW member support(I%26#39;m not sure what its called), we got $20 off a night at the Lodge, so that just worked out better.

I%26#39;m sure most people know this but be aware that everything in that package would be included with your stay anyways except for the $200 gift card. So keep all that in mind while booking! =)

Staying at Virginia beach resort hotel

I am going to be staying at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel from April 30th., to May 3rd. for a wedding, curious as to what is close to that. It sounds like it is a little away from the main drag is it easy to go from the hotel to the main beach area? Any good restaurants in easy walking distance to the hotel? Also curious what the beach weather should be like then, keeping in mind that I am a ';yankee'; and the water does not get as warm up here as it does there in the high season.

Staying at Virginia beach resort hotel

Yes, it is a drive to the main beach area, aka resort strip, but it%26#39;s easy. Just drive down Shore Drive. Eventually it turns into Atlantic Avenue. The road splits, and you%26#39;ll bear left to stay on Atlantic. But if you miss it, you%26#39;ll be on Pacific and you can just look for the next opportunity to turn toward Atlantic. Easy peasy.

In the meantime, you are near some good restaurants, most notably Lynnhaven Fish House, Hot Tuna and Surf Rider. I think you can walk to Hot Tuna, but I double you would walk to the others. I%26#39;m not sure.

As for beach weather, brrrrr. That water will be too cold - I don%26#39;t care where you%26#39;re from. Brrrr The sun will be good though. Nights will still require a sweater.

Have a great time at the wedding. Let us know if you have more questions.

Staying at Virginia beach resort hotel

About water temps...I hope it%26#39;s okay if I butt in. I just answered this so let me tell ya...if you%26#39;re from further up Canada...maybe it%26#39;ll be good for you.

First, this makes me think of something. I now people who have come to VB around that time of year for various reasons with their summer clothes thinking...beach...further south than I am now and hey wasn%26#39;t Virginia fighting on the other side in that War...May, hey it%26#39;s almost Memorial Day:):) And they froze and had to buy sweat shirts and slacks.

Average water temps in April and May are in the 50s.

Average highs in April about 65; low about 50 heading into May...average high about 75 (key word being %26#39;average%26#39; which it probably won%26#39;t reach very early May), low about 60. Now, that said, there could be a surprise warm spell.

Ah, a quick check of Summit NJ weather says tomorrow will be a high of 65. Hey, perfect. Open the windows. Run the shower/bath cool and you might be surprised as you check with a thermometer just how much more cold water you%26#39;ll need to add to the hot to get it to 50 degrees. Get in for as long as you can and then get out in the 65 degree weather.

Maybe you have polar bear blood. That would be wonderful because then you could indeed swim here during your stay. All the best.

You are staying right on the bay, I think you will enjoy the location. You are also within walking to One Fish Two Fish, a local favorite as well as Guadalajara-Mexican.

It may very well be a great beach day the weekend you are here, but not for swimming, maybe just toes in.

Thanks for the responses, Hot Tuna and One Fish, Two Fish sound pretty interesting. As to the water, I think I%26#39;ll stick to the pool, I don%26#39;t mind cold water, but that sounds a little too cool.

Weather is usually very nice during late April-early May, so if you feel like a walk, the entrance to First Landing State Park is only about a mile from your hotel. Beautiful wooded and waterside trails, totaling about 25 miles. If you%26#39;re interested, check out the brochure and trail map, …virginia.gov/state_parks/…1stland.pdf

That link looked too long to work so if it dosen%26#39;t go here, www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fir.shtml and click on general information for the park map.

I%26#39;ve walked all the trails, so post again if you have questions.

When walking along Shore Dr, to a restaurant etc, use the crosswalks and be careful near the side of the road. It%26#39;s a high traffic area and speed limits are 45+, so keep an eye open.

First Landing State Park would be wonderful. I think I heard your hotel has bicycles to take to the Park.

If you get to the ocean side and yes it%26#39;s tough without a bicycle and take the trolley or a bicycle down and along the boardwalk...it will be wonderful in Spring time. But remember the spf with all the sun reflecting off the water, sand and concrete boardwalk.

There are stops along the boardwalk for historic cottage museums, exhibits, the Pier, etc. The beach is also significant in that it is in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the World%26#39;s Longest Pleasure Beach.

While you%26#39;re there, right around that time are a few festivals along the Boardwalk...GospelFest (might be just before you arrive, not positive), Atlantic Coast Kite Festival and a newer one, Cornpone de Mayo. Check out www.vbfun.com for the info.

Of course, with your location at your hotel you%26#39;re not committed to the beach per se and might also travel %26#39;beyond the beach%26#39;.

Take your camera and don%26#39;t forget the binoculars for getting a better look at whatever is in the water...fish, vessels, etc.

Checking out the park, walking or by bike sounds like a great idea. I am not sure how much time I%26#39;ll have to check out the boardwalk area. Might just be an excuse to come down later in the summer though, my sister and brother in law just bought a condo near the water so we%26#39;ll see!

We have a second home on the water about a mile from VBRH and have utilized the hotel a couple of times when we had more guests than beds. They actually rent out segways there, which I have been wanting to try, but haven%26#39;t yet. I wouldn%26#39;t consider it walking distance, but One Fish Two Fish is awesome! Be prepared to spend some money there, though. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend Lynnhaven Fish House. We%26#39;ve eaten there 4 times and it is very hit or miss. There are too many other great places that are consistantly excellent. Chick%26#39;s has awesome food, as does Bubba%26#39;s. They also have a pretty good Sunday Brunch at the hotel.

You won%26#39;t miss anything at the main drag. Think Jersey Beach. Tourist traps, overpriced, bland food, and doped up kids. I have had no desire to go down there in the 3 years we have had our place.

Wow - I hardly recognized my beach from the previous poster%26#39;s description. I%26#39;m picturing a honky tonk town with stoners hanging on every corner and the sweet smell of marijuana in the air. But the reality to me is quite different. The city has spent a lot of money updating the streets and storefronts where legitimate businesses are selling souvenirs and gifts. I don%26#39;t consider that a tourist trap. It%26#39;s a tourist town that caters to families. The place is clean; the boardwalk is maintained with a park-like feel.

I%26#39;m sure the previous poster has a fondness for the beach since she has a beach house here, and certainly people may prefer a deserted ';Rodanthe-esque'; beach to the resort strip - and that%26#39;s fine. I just hope people reading the forum aren%26#39;t scared off.

    Mixing Bowl

What%26#39;s the construction situation at the ';mixing bowl';? I have been avoiding that for years, but some are now telling me it is complete? I will be southbound in late December, and will take the western loop of the I495 Beltway around DC.

    Mixing Bowl

Basically done, and I think by late December will be completely done, with the exception of work they will do at some point in connection with expansion of the Beltway. There are still lane closures from time to time as they fix things, but I don%26#39;t think it is something you%26#39;d need to avoid as a general matter anymore. It is a really amazing feat of engineering to behold.

For updates on lane closures and project status, they%26#39;ve got a website; it looks like they haven%26#39;t had any lane closures since last month at this point:

    www.springfieldinterchange.com/laneclosures/

    Mixing Bowl

As a long time Va. resident the mixing bowl is 80% complete in my opinion except for the piles of dirt and construction machinery. Most of us can travel the sky high loops and roundabout curves at 70 mph :} ; but you must be good at reading the signs and merging! Even I can become distracted and end up on my way to Baltimore, or to Tyson%26#39;s corner on my way to Arlington.

They have really done a good job though. I thought it was a mistake at first . Some exits go in the opposite direction of where you think you should be going, and wrap back around; so the first time is unnerving. But the HIGH HUGE overpasses flow like water except for traffic times AM %26amp; PM. Just keep your eyes on the massive signs, watch out for the idiots who merge at the last second across 4 lanes; and you will LOVE it.

  • Food near Hyatt Arlington?

Will be at Hyatt in late April w/ friend. She gets to sightsee, I get to go to school.

Saw prev post, haven%26#39;t been to Hyatt in several years.. Is Ray%26#39;s Burgers as delish as yelp reviewers say it is? Any other inexp or moderate places to eat in area? Still Ruby Tues across street on Wilson? Japanese place across the street by the Spice of Life deli?

Any suggestions appreciated. No car, so within walking distance or short cab ride away.

    Thanks all!

    Food near Hyatt Arlington?

Ruby Tuesdays is still across the street from Hyatt. There%26#39;s a pizza/pasta place up the road - I think near Safeway Mart and also Chinese Garden, but have not been to either. Starbucks is a few blocks away. The Hyatt rooms have been remodeled and are very nice. I was there a few weeks ago.

    Food near Hyatt Arlington?

My husband has a meeting at the Hyatt Crystal City next week-is this the same Hyatt in this post? I would like to know if there is any shopping nearby and about restaurants also. I am trying to decide if I will go with him. I would like to have something to do nearby. Thanks.

nlg: No it%26#39;s not the same one. The Hyatt they were discussing is in the Rosslyn area. Crystal City is also a good location for visiting anything in the DC area. There is a mall across the street (Crystal City Shops) with all the usual upscale stores. There is also a Metro station in the mall, which you can use to get anywhere in the area. There are plenty of restaurants in the area as well. DC and all it has to offer is less than 10 minutes away on the Metro. You should go along if you have the chance.

Thanks for your help. I think I will go.

I haven%26#39;t been to Ray%26#39;s Burgers, but I can tell you there are tons of inexpensive food choices near the Hyatt Arlington. You%26#39;ll have no trouble finding good places to eat in the area.

From the Hyatt Arlington, you can walk left (downhill) a block on Wilson St to get to the Rosslyn Metro station, which pretty much opens up all the dining in the area to you. There are also several carry out / cafe options inside the metro building.

If you continue downhill one more block, you%26#39;ll see many more fast food choices. I like Chipotle (great guacamole) and Baja Fresh (awesome salsa bar) for Mexican. If you just look around while you walk you%26#39;ll see many other choices. Almost all the office buildings have pay-by-the-pound buffets in their first floor lobby areas. There is also a Chop%26#39;t (salads), a Coci, and another sushi place.

If, when you leave the Hyatt, you instead turn right and walk uphill 2 blocks, you%26#39;ll see several more options. There is a Cafe Cucu on the right, and it is my favorite cafeteria choice in the area. The selection is extensive (including sushi, salads, fried chicken, mac %26#39;n%26#39; chz, made to order sandwiches) and it typically doesn%26#39;t get too crowded or noisy, which allows you to hear the international music they play. There is also a Safeway grocery store next door with ready-to-go items. If you continue walking there is a Quiznos on the right and then another block up on the left is a Red Hot and Blue BBQ place (a bit more upscale, on the order of TGIF).

Note that most of the cafeteria style restaurants serve office workers and are only open banker%26#39;s hours. The chain restaurants are typically open nights and weekends. Good luck, I hope you enjoy your visit!

Still having trouble picking a hotel: Quality Inn Mt-Vernon?

I have a family of 5 (kids 8,13 %26amp; 15). I have had other post regarding picking a hotel for our DC vacation. I had finally made a decision to go with Embassy Suites even though it was more than I wanted to spend. We decided that we could manage the extra money. We were concerned about transportation going into DC and were sold on the idea of being able to walk to the metro station across the street. We now have had a couple of minor financial set backs but I am still determined to take the trip. I am now considering change to Quality Inn. The rooms look smaller but we can probably manage. My biggest concern is transporation. One review says that it is 5 minutes from metro stop but I have also heard that the parking lots fill up very early. Will this be a problem for us? We will be traveling in July. Thanks for any input.

Still having trouble picking a hotel: Quality Inn Mt-Vernon?

I%26#39;m going to go out on a limb here and tell you to reconsider. That hotel is not anywhere near metro and frankly is so far out of the area and you will be miserable. I would consider the Marriott Residence Inn on Duke Street. They serve a full breakfast, snacks and dinner. I think once you take into account the added cost of meals, the additional value is worth the cost. Both Embassy Suites/Residence Inn Old Town are great; centrally located, safe places to visit washington.

Reduce the days you visit, rather than reduce the quality of the time you spend here. You will not regret it.

    www.ccalex.org/WorshipAndMusic/Services.aspx

Thanks for the info! We are going to try attend services there for Easter Sunday.

It%26#39;s easy to find -- from D.C. just cross the 14th street bridge. Once on the Virginia side, follow signs to ';National Airport'; rather than ';Richmond.'; Christ Church is in a historic, elegant neighborhood. There are countless touristy shops and restaurants near there along King Street toward the River.

Sounds good, we will enjoy the church services and the surrounding area, I am sure. Thanks for the directions.

Transport from Newport News airport to Williamsburg

We will be arriving at the Newport News Airport on a Wed. in April and are wondering what would be the best way to get to Williamsburg. We hope not to rent a car.

Transport from Newport News airport to Williamsburg

best is always subjective. From PHF you have a few options - rental car, taxi and limo.

    Taxi is about $25.

Where will you be a guest and how are you getting around once here? Although there are sguttle buses between the major attractions it%26#39;s not the best or quickest - most visitors benefit by having a car. You can go without a car, some do.

Taxis will outside the airport. If you want a limo arrange ahead of time - about $50.

Actually you could use the bus system - laughable since it would take hours and require many transfers between systems. Public transportation is not our strong suit!

At least you are arriving in PHF and not ORF - some do this and tacjle the tunnel - a nightmare at times.

Transport from Newport News airport to Williamsburg

The Newport News Airport web site (http://www.nnwairport.com/) lists the taxi companies and limo services under the ground transportation tab on the left of the screen. It might be worth your time to make a few phone calls prior to your visit, and arrange transportation -- many guests will set up transportation to/from their lodging as well as local trips with one cab company or limo service.

If you are staying at a Colonial Williamsburg property or purchase any of the CW -- Jamestown/Yorktown tickets, the colonial shuttle will be available to you, which runs to each of these sites.

    Enjoy your visit.

    October 2009 in Williamsburg

I%26#39;ve been reading many posts and are getting both excited and confused about our vacation to Williamsburg in October. There is soooo much to do! I%26#39;ve enjoyed reading about the taverns and the other entertaining venues and just want to do it all!!!! Impossible! We do, however, want to do a day into Washington DC. I have the name of one sightseeing company that goes into Washington - Tidewater touring - but does anyone else any any other suggestions?

I%26#39;m sure this will be just the first of many questions that I have for all you knowledgeable people so please be patient with me(smile). I always try to get as much info before we go anywhere. Thanks to all in advance. Sue

October is a great time to visit Williamsburg!

  • Questions, Questions, Questions

I have many questions....still! Please answer whichever ones you can! =)

    1) I have an extremely picky eater. Think hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza. We wanted to eat at the taverns but nothing appealed to us. She%26#39;s probably too old for the kids menu. Any suggestions for restraunts? I love the Cheese Shop, but thats definitely not her cup of tea.

    2) Carriage rides! How early should I be there? How much does it cost? I am staying at the Williamsburg Lodge and I heard you get preferred reservation.

    3) We have a few evening programs to choose from: In Defense of Our Liberty, Polly Honeycombe, The Great Theatrical Disaster of 1790, An Evening of Dance at the Palace, Revolutionary Points of View and the Gunpowder Incident. Which of THOSE do you recommend. Sorry, we%26#39;re just not ghost tour people.

    4) Is the Lathorn Tour a ghost tour? It didn%26#39;t sound like it but I%26#39;m not sure.

    5) Is there a Kmart WalMart or Target anywhere close? We%26#39;ll need groceries and stuff. Even a smaller store will do. Something with lots of choices.

    6) Any great souvineers that you would recommend? We have lots of people to shop for.

    7) What do you think of the Willaimsburg Antique Shop? I%26#39;m very curious.

    8) Has anyone been to Presidents Park? It looks interesting and we were thinking that we would really like it.

    9) Anything at all that you would say we have to see would greatly help! We%26#39;re not going to BG(we know the guy who is in charge so we got free tickets last time but we didn%26#39;t even go on one ride). Somehow we completely missed the Revolutionary City last time!! Is this worth it?

    THANKS SO MUCH!

    Questions, Questions, Questions

    1. Gold Course Grill for hot dogs. Also Retro%26#39;s (Merchants Square on Prince George Street) - hot dogs, hamburgers, freshly cut french fries, frozen custard shakes, homemade limeades, etc. Pizza on the Square in the Kimball Theatre. Stephano%26#39;s Pizza, also in Merchants Square is pretty good, too. Huzzahs! near the Visitors Center has pizza and lots of other choices, too.

    2. Ask at your hotel; they can give you good advice.

    3. Any of them; from the descriptions, which ones interest you the most?

    4. Lanthorn tour is not a ghost tour.

    5. We have all three, including 2 Targets. The newer, bigger one is near Water Country and Presidents Park.

    6. For reasonably priced souvenirs with lots of choice - something for everyone - try King%26#39;s Treasure in Merchants Square. The discount stores listed in #5 also have some souvenirs.

    7. Williamsburg Antique Shop? There%26#39;s an Antique Mall in Lightfoot that has lots of dealers and displays - you could spend hours!

    8. Haven%26#39;t yet been, but most people I%26#39;ve heard from say it%26#39;s better than they expected, very interesting, lots of info.

    9. Yes! Do Revolutionary City. Some of the evening programs mentioned above will be more meaningful after you%26#39;ve experienced Rev City.

    Questions, Questions, Questions

^Thanks so much! You are always so helpful!

Have you tried the Lanthorn Tour? I%26#39;m glad to hear its not a ghost tour. Would you say its a nice family type program?

And yes, I meant the antique mall! Thanks! I%26#39;ll be trying that then. Well thanks for all the help! Its so nice to have this forum!

Oops, forgot to add...all of those evening programs interest us. I love to learn fun facts, but I also really enjoy a good play. One thats not scary and is entertaining is what we%26#39;re looking for! =)

The Lanthorn Tour is not a ghost tour but a lantern lit tour of several trade shops. You do not observe the tradesman plying his trade as during the daytime visits to the shops but learn about how tradespeople fit into 18th century society, how he and his family lived and the training necessary to reach his level of expertise.

The only play being performed at this time is Polly Honeycomb. It is typical of 18th century British farce and was a play presented by the Virginia Company of traveling performers.

Your daughter may enjoy Dance, Our Dearest Diversion. It is not ballet but a demonstration of 18th century dances, such as the minuet and the VA reel. Those who want can learn the steps and dance along. An Evening of Dance at the Palace is not on the schedule this summer.

Carriage rides can be booked whenever hotel reservations are made - the only way to reserve in advance. Otherwise, rides can be booked early(weather permitting) on the day of the ride at any ticket office and even at the Lodge, if and when it is decided if there is to be a ticket seller there this year. The cost is $12.50 per person for a 15 minute pleasure ride on a carriage or a 30 minute ride on the stagewagon.

    ^Thanks! =)

Maybe when we%26#39;re going isn%26#39;t considered summer still but i know its on the calendar of events for the week we%26#39;re going. All the ones I mentioned are going on the week were going(in august).

The Lanthorn Tour sounds good then! I might try that.

The reason we decided not to do Dance Our Dearest Diversion is because we don%26#39;t want to participate in the dancing. My daughter is too embarrassed and says she doesn%26#39;t like partner dancing. I suppose thats why she hasn%26#39;t tried ballroom yet.

I think we%26#39;ll try the carriage ride. It sounds like fun even if $25 for 15 minutes is pricey.

This forum is great! Thanks again!

For Dance, Our Dearest Diversion, audience members are given the opportunity to participate, but participation is not required. Definitely do one of the dance programs, though.

^ Alright, it sounds like we%26#39;ll definitely fit in a dance program! =) I think its really cool to be able to go in the Palace at night. The tour there was just OK, at least thats what we thought.

I am especially hoping for peoples opinion on the Lanthorn Tour, Revolutionary Points of View, the Gunpowder Incident, and In Defense of Our Liberty. Those seem to be the ones that we%26#39;re not sure if we will enjoy.

#6 question: I second the motion on King%26#39;s Treasure. Really nice things, at reasonable prices. All your typical stuff, keychains, magnets, pens, pencils, etc, etc. Plus nice quality t-shirts and hats. Plus lots of odds and ends, too numerous to mention here. It is a fun store. I%26#39;ve learned to buy one better quality t-shirt then a lot of cheapo ones. They last longer and fit better.

I%26#39;ve gone to The Pottery Factory for Williamsburg Pottery. I get the ';seconds'; which are like half price of what you would pay in the shoppes, maybe more. No matter to me, they just sit on my shelf anyway, and nobody knows or cares. I don%26#39;t know if I would make a trip to the Pottery any more tho. What do you all think? It%26#39;s ';cheese factor'; has really gone up thru the years, in my opinion. It is sort of fun for a first timer, tho. I mean, I%26#39;m not sorry I went, EACH and EVERY time I%26#39;ve visited CW.

Might as well promote the Candy Factory Warehouse while I%26#39;m at it. It, too, is a fun store. Lot%26#39;s of retro candy, penny candy, CHOCOLATES!!! and a vast amount of silly wrapped candy that the kids would have fun with.

    catneal,

Thank you for informing that the Lanthorn Tour is NOT observing craftsmen doing their trades. I really, really thought it was just that and now am reconsidering whether I want to switch my tickets to something else. Do you have an opinion as to the quality of the tour? (catneal doesn%26#39;t have to answer--I would be happy to hear from anyone who has been!)

I don%26#39;t know if anyone has yet answered about Presidents Park, but I just ran across the reviews in the ';Things to Do'; section of Tripadvisor, and they are terrible. I would scratch that one off your list.

memorial weekend at the four sails?

My family (husband, 4 %26amp; 7 year old girls, and myself)are planning to go to VB for a week, possibly the weekend before/week after memorial day. is it super busy? would it be better or worse than around last week of june or week of fourth of july?

we%26#39;d like to go to williamsburg, busch gardens as well that week - i%26#39;m assuming a weekday is better at those places, correct?

we are thinking of staying at the four sails (we have a timeshare to use, of our choices, it got the best ratings on this site). Anyone have any thoughts on this hotel?

thanks - we are really looking forward to our vacation!

memorial weekend at the four sails?

Check out vbfun.com for events around that time.

Remember the Music-Remember the Heroes is Maay 23 -25 on the oceanfront. There will be fireworks and bands at the Pavilion at 17th St., the Palladium at 24th and Neptune Park at 31st, among other things.

South of the resort area is the Strawberry Festival the 24th and 25th.

That same weekend is Big Bands at the Cavalier, a grand historic hotel in the northern end of the resort area. They will have music from the 30s to 50s, big band sound; you feel like your in the Great Gatsby!

The following weekend, the 30th to June 1, is the Patriotic Fetival, a tribute to our armed forces with top name groups entertaining. There will be big names at the 5th St. stage which they set up on the sand on the 300 ft. wide beach. It is fun and if you stay just a few blocks away you don%26#39;t feel any of the crowds...just fun. There will also be things going on on the other small stages up and down the boardwalk. Guess who%26#39;ll be the big names? Sugarland Friday, Brian McKnight Sat., and Travis Tritt Sunday. And all FREE!

memorial weekend at the four sails?

Many Virginia schools will be in session until mid June, so I would suspect the crowds will be lighter at the parks and Williamsburg, especially during the week. After the middle of June crowds really increase.

A negative variable would be that the water temp will still be chilly. Most kids don%26#39;t care though! I am amazed when I see them swimming even in Nov!

thanks everyone! Unfortunately, there are no timeshares open the week we want to go.....so we are going to stay in williamsburg i guess. I am a little disappointed, but I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll enjoy it there, and we%26#39;ll just drive to the beach a few times.

We%26#39;ll plan to go to the beach on sunday before memorial day and possibly memorial day (unless you all think it%26#39;ll be crazy busy). Maybe memorial day will be a hotel/pool/mini golf/shopping day.

then busch gardens the tuesday after memorial day (i%26#39;ll make sure they are open). Then play the rest of the week by ear. I know we want a couple of beach days, but they won%26#39;t be full days, on the beach all day long.

    thanks again!!

What timeshare are you staying in at Williamsburg?

Hi, Suekap. A good question. This post is from over a year ago. And the OP started out asking about accommodations in Virginia Beach...Four Sails.

Can you start a new post please...don%26#39;t mind if it%26#39;s on Virginia Beach for people that want to ask about staying in VB and going to Williamsburg; or maybe on the Williamsburg Forum.

That way more people can benefit from current info. Thanks for the question.

    CW in September

What do I need to know? We have never been before. Our daughter wants to go there for her 16th birthday. I have noticed in researching hotels in the area that several are already sold out. Is something going on from Sept 6-10th? How many days does it take to fully take it in? Any advice would really be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    besnini

    CW in September

I usually recommend two full days for Colonial Williamsburg, if not more. That%26#39;s Labor Day Sept. 7, so it%26#39;s probably the weekend that%26#39;s sold out, not the latter part of the week, my guess anyway.

    CW in September

I wanted to add that they are doing renovations on one of the hotel. I tried booking around that and then I called them, they said they renovate some hotels at that time. You should start looking at everything on their site. They have tons of info! I missed so much last time I was there. Be sure to check out their calendar! =)

My daughter was hoping to do the exact same thing but it ended up not working out. Now we%26#39;re going later instead.

  • Trip from July 1 to July 5 with a 2 year old ...

    Hi All,

My husband and I are planning our first trip to the Williamsburg area, with our 2 year old daughter. We are thinking of making the trip around July 4th weekend and I needed some advice in that regard:

    1. How are the weather and crowds at that time? If it is too crowded and/or too hot/rainy may be we will think of postponing the trip.

    2. We will be driving from Edison, NJ, what is the best way to do it? Read a few posts about the cape may ferry. From where to where do you ride the ferry? How long is the ride and how much time does it save on the drive?

    3. I was thinking we can plan on having 3 full days there and do Busch Gardens on 2 days and Jamestown Settlement 1 day. Not sure whether we will be able to day anything on the day we arrive and leave. May be we will go around CW on the 2nd day of BG. Or should we do CW and skip Jamestown Settlement? How are the 2 different? I am really confused which one to pick. Our daughter is a big ELMO fan so I am thinking may be we should do BG 2 days. Thoughts please?

    4. Where is the Yankee Candle Company? Can we make a stop-over on our way back? Something that interested me a lot when I read about it, though I don%26#39;t think my husband and daughter would care a lot.

    5. What would be a good hotel to stay close to BG?

Thank you vey much for all your thoughts/advice/suggestions.

Trip from July 1 to July 5 with a 2 year old ...

    1. Pretty busy, as most national holidays are in tourist areas. Can be pretty hot, humid - more likely than not.

    2. Sorry, can%26#39;t help with this one.

    3. Your daughter is so young, she%26#39;d probably like Jamestown Settlement better. I wouldn%26#39;t want to drag a 2-year-old around BG for 2 days, no matter how much she likes Elmo, but you know your daughter better than we do.

    4. Yankee Candle Company is at 2200 Richmond Road/US-60. You can drive to it easily. The Christmas/snow area is pretty neat. It%26#39;s so much more than just candles!

    5. You can do a search for hotels near Busch Gardens. There are several good ones - what%26#39;s right for you depends on your price range and amenities required. Once you%26#39;ve picked out several that interest you, read reviews, and then post back with questions.

Trip from July 1 to July 5 with a 2 year old ...

    Thanks for your reply Zoey.

I am rethinking whether we should move it to Easter weekend? Even if its crowded it will atleast not be as hot. B/w Easter, July 4th and Labor Day is one better over the other?

B/w CW and Jamestown Settlement where are animals found? I had read some posts which I seem to have a problem finding now. She also likes musical instruments, does either site offer those?

I think she should be okay with 2 days BG, over the holidays (she was 18 months) we were in Orlando for 3 days - and she had fun.

I think I will squeeze in Yankee Candles ;)

    Thanks again.

Easter will be less crowded than July 4, since school spring breaks are so apread out now. For example, even though Easter is still 10 days away, we have had many family and school groups in town this week because of varied spring recess times throughout the country.

As far as animals, many suggestions come to mind: be sure to see the Clydesdales at Busch Gardens when you are there-- they are located just past the entrance walk on the way to Ireland. You may visit their stables and see them in an adjoining corral. There are other birds and animals on the pathway between Ireland and France at BG.

At CW, there are sheep grazing at the corner of Francis and Nassau Streets; horses at the eastern end of Francis Street and at the corral at Nicholson and Botetourt Streets; and of course a horse drawn carriage ride down Duke of Gloucester Street would be a real treat for you and your child! There are also oxen in a corral on Francis Street, but they are a little more difficult to see unless they are brought out during Revolutionary City (they are actually used as barricades sometimes, very effectively I might add!)

Dining in a Colonial Tavern will no doubt include strolling musicians, playing fiddles, flutes, and guitars. Small children are always entertained by the minstrels right at the dinner table. There are a few evening programs that include colonial music and dancing, but they may be too late or too long for a one year old.

    Enjoy your visit.

The ferry goes from Cape May NJ to Lewes Delaware. It may or may not save you any time at all if you%26#39;re going to Williamsburg. It%26#39;s also pretty pricey. If you do it, you must have a reservation, especially around holidays. I would use it if you were going to the Eastern Shore, but I think it%26#39;s out of your way for Williamsburg.

    http://www.capemaylewesferry.com/

I make the trip from Richmond to East Brunswick and back about once a month. Most of the time I take the NJ Turnpike to I-95 all the way to Richmond, which on a GOOD day takes me around 5 hours. From there, you would need to take I-295 around Richmond to I-64 east to Williamsburg, which will take close to another hour.

Sometimes I pick up US 301 near Newark DE and take that to Richmond to avoid Baltimore and/or DC. 301 will take you to Richmond where it intersects with I-295. It doesn%26#39;t necessarily save much time because of the lights, but it does save aggravation if you know you%26#39;re driving through DC during a high-traffic time.

Around a holiday weekend I-95 can be horrendous. I usually leave NJ no later than 7 AM to get past DC before noon. The later you wait the worse it will be unless you wait until evening. My BIL drove from Somerset NJ to Williamsburg last year on Good Friday, and he spent 12 hours in the car, after he left the house at 11 AM.

BixDoc and 22Tango Thanks for your replies.

Hubby says we will do WBG end of April or in July around a regular weekend. If we can skip the crowds by taking an extra day off, totally worth it. :) The plan like I mentioned earlier is to try and have 3 full days there.

Bixdoc Thanks for all the details on the animals.

Are Colonial Taverns available in CW as well as Jamestown Settlement? I am a vegetarian would they have vegetarin meal options or is there a place we could go for coffee and baked goodies?

If we somehow squueze in 1 evening program what should it be? What price range are the tickets in for these programs?

Tango, you must be really good with long drives. I am so skeptical this is going to be our first long drive with our 2 year old. Thanks for all the route suggestions. We will try and leave early morning, b/w 7 and 8. Are Friday evenings of a non-holiday weekend bad?

    Thanks again.

Leaving between 7 %26amp; 8 should put you past the worst of the I-95 DC traffic (which is south of DC) before 3 PM when things slow down to a crawl. If you can%26#39;t get past Woodbridge by 3 PM, though, you%26#39;re going to hit major traffic on Friday afternoon, especially in warm weather when everyone%26#39;s headed to the beach for the weekend.

I%26#39;m going to offer an alternate idea that has worked for me when taking long trips with young ones. Get up super-early, say 4 AM, but leave the little one in bed until the car is all packed up and ready to go. Take her in her PJs and put her in the car. Leave immediately, maybe it%26#39;s 5 AM by now. With any luck you%26#39;ll have 2-3 hours of quiet time in the car. When she wakes up, stop for breakfast and get her dressed, this should be near the rest areas in Maryland. You%26#39;ll get to DC a little after 9, when rush hour has eased off, and be at Williamsburg by early afternoon.

22Tango, the Colonial Taverns are in CW, not in Jamestown Settlement. The Taverns each have vegetarian selections, and the Raleigh Tavern Bake Shop on Duke of Gloucester Street offers sandwiches and sweets.

For evening programs, with a two year old, perhaps the dance events in the Governor%26#39;s Palace or the Capitol would be enjoyable and hold the little one%26#39;s interest.

    Oops...

Sorry, previous post is for smili, not 22 Tango.

Another alternate route, which avoids the NJ Turnpike and 95 and just about all of the tolls is to go through PA and MD, and west of DC. Taking the turnpike, etc. you%26#39;ll pay close to $30 rount trip in toll. This route you pay ,75 one way, crossing into PA. I go this way from Morris County to Wburg all the time. For me, its about 25 miles more

distance-wise, but MUCH less stressful, and a lot less traffic.

Take 78 W to 81 S into Harrisburg, PA. Pick up 1-83 south, then 581W towards Camp Hill/Gettysburg, to 15 South. 15 will take you through Gettysburg, PA and into Frederick, MD - about 68 miles or so. From 15, pick up I-270 South, stay on that, and follow the signs for I-495/Northern Virginia. Follow the signs for 95 South, and then you can follow the same route as if you took the NJ Turnpike, etc.

BixDoc thanks for the dining and evening program suggestions. Tango and Siamese Cat thanks a lot for the directions and time/money saving tips.

Gonna do some reaing and then get back with more questions.

    Have a good week ahead.

    going alone to shenandoah Valley

I%26#39;m 56 and going alone for 3-4 days to the Shenandoah Valley. I want to see the fall foliage, hike, relax and eat well and be next to the river. any recommendations?

    going alone to shenandoah Valley

Shenandoah is a beautiful National Park with many scenic hikes for all abilities. Good information can be found at www.nps.gov/shen.

You probably know this already but.........

If you are hiking during October/November, the nights and mornings will usually be cool/cold but the days may be sunny and even warm, so wear layers. You may want to check with a ranger at the visitor center for trail suggestions especially when hiking solo. I would say, review trails online, see which one interest you and match your abilities, and when possible stick with popular trails because anything can happen; an injury, fall, sprain, wildlife, etc and on well traveled trails someone will likely be coming by. Carry first aid, whistle or signal, cellphone (by the way, I learned the hard way...if your cell has no signal it searches for a signal, depleting your battery, so turn it off until you need to use it, also consider buying one of those Eveready battery chargers $20 Walgreens specific for each type of cell...lifesaver when your battery is dead) plenty of water and snacks, pepper spray, maybe bear spray, etc. Let someone know what trail you%26#39;re hiking, timeframe, and contact someone at a specific time each day so if they don%26#39;t get a call from you, they know to call for help, provide them Park phone numbers and any emergency numbers so they can take quick action.

You will likely meet other hikers and be invited to join them. A hiking stick or trekking poles are helpful to take the stress off ankles, knees, and of course you can use it to whack something if necessary.

Some of my favorite hikes are:

Dark Hollow Falls, Stony Man, Bearfence, Rose River Loop, Hawksbill, but there are many more.

    Hope this helps. Happy Trails.

    going alone to shenandoah Valley

I couldn%26#39;t believe I found your post because I am 56 and am planning a solo road trip from NJ to Skyline Drive/Shenandoah probably this fall or next June. My personal plan is to drive Skyline Drive, a little hiking, check out all the overlooks, and end in Virginia Beach via Williamstown. I am still doing research.

Unfortunately, I have no recommendations for you but enjoyed reading the one who did.

Have a great time and if you can, post your experience when you return.

BakuBabs, Sounds like you%26#39;re planning a great adventure. When doing your research, please post any questions you have for the Virginia segment of your trip, we have many knowledgable participants in forum who will be glad to share their expertise.

    Happy trails.

You read my mind ';goneagain2'; as I am researching and saw your post. What would be your suggestions and route from the end of Skyline Drive to Virginia Beach for seeing some of Viriginia%26#39;s highlights? As I am beginning from South Jersey, I thought I would drive to Front Royal and spend the night; then spend the 2nd day doing Skyline Drive. Thanks for your advice %26amp; suggestions.

Virginia has several cavern tours. The best and most famous one is ';Luray Caverns'; near the town of Luray. Dress warmly for underground.

Charlottesville is rated on many lists as one of the very best cities in America to live, or retire to. It has a university, scenery, culture, and a ';pedestrian only'; zone downtown. ';Monticello'; the home of Thomas Jefferson on a mountaintop is there, and ';Ash Lawn'; the home of James Monroe. Vineyard tours nearby.

Richmond and Petersburg both have many Civil War-related Monuments and Museums. Richmond has the student bohemian neighborhood known as ';Carytown'; or ';Fan District.'; See the forum section on those cities.

Colonial Williamsburg is outstanding, and possibly the world%26#39;s premier example of a living-history town. Read about in on this forum. Jamestown Settlement, another living-history site, is a few miles from it via a scenic parkway road.

If you drive to the end of Skyline Drive, you will be in Waynesboro (an alternate route, if you have had you fill of SNP (?) is to take 33 to 29 into C%26#39;Ville)...from there you can take I64E to hit Charlottesville...Monticello and extremely nice 2 mile hike to Jefferson Visitors Center called Saunders-Monticello trail www.monticello.org/parkway/trail.html, then on to Richmond, Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown, Newport News...Mariners Museum, great museum and 5 mile hike around Lake Maury on the grounds, then on to Va Beach...include a hike in First Landing State Park while at the beach, www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fir.shtml, it%26#39;s unique, bald cypress trees, inland beach, river, woods. I%26#39;ve hiked all the trails in First Landing, so just ask if any questions. Have fun planning.

    Happy trails

Thanks Maryland Mist - I love pedestrian only areas and love your description of Colonial Williamsburg. What would you recommend? Williamsburg and Jamestown in one day and drive on; or spend the night in one of those areas? Thanks again! :)

If you have the time, spend a day (or more) and evening in Williamsburg, there%26#39;s plenty to see and do, very unique area. Check out some previous posts in the Williamsburg forum for ideas. Added benefit is driving the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown or Yorktown, it%26#39;s a lovely road with nice scenery.

Thanks goneagain2. I appreciate your advice and suggestions; sounds like I don%26#39;t have to do the whole SNP drive. I wanted to know your opinion/suggestions of overnight stops on my way to VA Beach. I%26#39;m thinking of the first week in November - what do you think?

Thanks again. And as I said earlier somewhere - I LOVE TRIPADVISOR.COM - it%26#39;s the best. And why, becasue of people like you.
