colonial wiliamsburg

We are in Williamsburg for a week. Our first day we went to Busch Gardens, VERY nice and we had a great time...Second day went to colonial williamsburg...VERY dissappointed!! It has changed way to much from what it use to be. The workers were snotty and all the stores that use to be open were closed...no fresh baking any more! Wow to say the least I would not recommend going there!! I haven%26#39;t been to Jamestown yet or yorktown, planning on trying that tomorrow. I have talked to alot of people from around here and they say that jamestown is alot better then williamsburg. So I am hoping we have fun tomorrow!! I did enjoy the antique mall today, best place i have ever been to with antiques! It is HUGE!! Oh and yeah alot of places close early, I guess we came kind of early in the summer but, it%26#39;s already HOT so I%26#39;m glad we didn%26#39;t come later in the summer!! Well i%26#39;m crossing my fingers that the other historical places are worth it!! We drove all the way from Louisiana! :)

I am sad to hear that you have been disappointed in Williamsburg. Many changes have been made over the past 25 years we have been visiting, but there are still many sites to enjoy. Have you had time to participate in the presentation at the Randolph House? It is new this year and very enjoyable and educational. Try to take part in one of the trials at the Courthouse. Perhaps you could even be one of the actors chosen for a part in the trial. If you haven%26#39;t had a chance to listen to and/or take part in Revolutionary City, don%26#39;t miss this activity. You will find out so much about CW in the vignettes that take place around the town. I know the tours of the Palace and Capitol may be much different from what you found many years ago, but they are still part of the history that you want your family to experience. Since it is hot, stop in at the Raleigh Tavern Bakery for a snack and a cold drink. Don%26#39;t forget to have your picture taken in the stocks. Give CW another chance.

I too hope you%26#39;ll give CW another chance. Things have changed over the years; I don%26#39;t think the baking at Raleigh Tavern bakery has happened for many years. I don%26#39;t remember it, and I first came in 1997. The baked goods at the Raleigh Tavern bakery are freshly baked daily, just not at that location.

With all the changes over the years, the biggest one was the addition of the Revolutionary City programming, which delves into the collapse of the Royal Government on day one, and explores what the Revolutionary War meant for the citizens here on day two.

This week, tours at the Capitol at midday on alternate days feature how the restoration came about. The Capitol was first opened 75 years ago, and it was interesting to me to hear how those involved in the restoration/reconstruction decided which Capitol to interpret, learning about 18th century construction, etc.

The foodways program has interesting demonstrations throughout the year at the Palace kitchen, and at the Peyton Randolph kitchen. Chocolate making is one that is very popular, but it%26#39;s usually done in cooler weather months.

For me, one of the best additions was the Great Hopes Plantation, on the pathway from the Visitors Center to the Historic Area. You%26#39;ll see livestock, crops growing, perhaps some carpentry, etc. I%26#39;ve found the interpreters there to be very engaging.

All by way of saying, if you try again with some different experiences, you may be glad you did. Or you may find out that, although other people love Colonial Williamsburg, it%26#39;s no longer for you.

Sounds like you found at least a few highlights so far ... and like you don%26#39;t need those jeans you were so worried about! :) Best of luck on the rest of your trip!
