Affordable accomodation in Charlottesville?

I%26#39;m travelling through Charlottesville in early July (visiting Monticello and going downtown before moving on to Shenandoa National Park the next day) - can anyone recommend accomodation for a female single traveller in that are, around $100 if possible? Preferably a backpacker hostel (if that sort of thing exists in the US?)or B%26amp;B.

Thanks a lot!

I do not have personal experience at this hostel/inn, but the Alexander House has a review on TA and more information may be seen at infogizmo.com/alexander_house_inn.html. Also, while hiking in Charlottesville, I stayed at the Super 8 on Route 29 (see review on TA), it%26#39;s very basic, seemed safe to me, clean room, absolutely no frills, $50, more reviews of the motel by other travelers, some hated it, others thought OK, just don%26#39;t expect much. Hope this helps. Enjoy Charlottesville and Shenandoah.

Happy trails

Sorry, I noticed my link does not work. Try www.hostelz.com/hostel/42362-Alexander-House and if that doesn%26#39;t work just Google it. From the description, this Inn may meet your price and lodging needs.

thanks goneagain2, just tried emailing them, because it looks quite good for the price etc. but email came back undeliverable. Might try calling them instead...

I just spoke to the Alexander House manager, Brad, he said to email him on his personal address which is bradperu@hotmail.com and to put Alexander House Inquiry in the title of your message. If you prefer to call the number is 434 409-3600. Hope this helps.

wow, thank you very much!!!:) I will email him tomorrow!

It%26#39;s interesting that Charlottesville, a city with a large student population and packed with tourists over the summer, doesn%26#39;t offer much in inexpensive, clean accommodations for hikers and cross country travelers. I was able to spend three months economically in Europe taking advantage of hostels. The other option, more expensive, is the Best Western in Ruckersville - north of C%26#39;ville. It%26#39;s called the Charlottesville Airport Best Western and it%26#39;s a very nice, new, and clean hotel for around $100 per night. It%26#39;s advantage is that it is closer to the entrance to the National Park.

A word of warning, however, when hiking in the National Park: never hike alone. I love to hike by myself, but there have been a number of incidents with women hiking alone on the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Park trails. The more popular trails, especially those with waterfalls, will be more populated.

Thanks again, goneagain2, I was able to book a bed at Alexander House! :)

hello laura,

thanks for the tip - I will be driving through the park, maybe make a detour on foot to one of the busier waterfalls you mentioned (if you can point out any particular must-sees on route, I%26#39;d be happy to hear about them!), so hopefully hiking alone shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.

kind regards

steph

Glad you were able to get reservations, hope the Alexander House works well for you and please write a review so others can benefit from your experience. Once at SNP, check with a ranger at the visitors center for hiking solo advice...they should direct you to well travelled trails. One of the most popular, although quite short, is Dark Hollow Falls. About 1 1/2 mi roundtrip, moderate difficulty, steep, scenic waterfall, trailhead at milepost 50.7 in the Big Meadows area. During early July, you should have plenty of other hikers on this trail, as well as other popular trails. Enjoy.

Happy trails.

Glad you were able to book with Alexander House. I am familiar with it and it is a great location and a great value. Another great resource for c%26#39;ville that actually has alexander house listed is http://www.collegeweekends.com/ you can see alexander house at www.collegeweekends.com/more_details.aspx… but they have lots of other affordable places there too and you can sort the listings by price which makes it easy to find something in your range
